    Pilot Power

any of you Pilot Power user heard of this? from zx10 board.

"I too like the Michelin Pilot tires a lot, but watch out for the Pilot Power H2 tire. I had a set of them on my bike and after about 200 hard canyon miles the rear tire bubbled up big soft ball size lumps and split open on my while I was riding home! I did some checking and michelin said they stopped the H2 line and was going to do something better, I did stick with michelin, but I went with the Pilot Race tires, I run a S2 front and a M2 rear and all I can say is they are just excellent tires, I have about 1000 miles on them and no trouble, so just stay away from the H2, its bad news, take it from me, it was all I could do to save my 10 from going down, at first it was like a really bad vibration, then it went flat in about 5 minutes and it was all hell from there, I did manage to get the bike stopped and all, no damage, but I really would stay away from the H2 Pilot Power tires. There definately is a difference in the Pilot Power and Pilot Race, so check what tire you are buying. Thats my two cents."

the H2, S2, M2, are these marking on the tire? now im getting paranoid.

    Kham,

I don't know if this is what happened to the person that posted the quote in your post but I had a tire do the same thing. It had nothing to do with the manufacturer of the tire it had to do with the fact that I had some how developed a small air leak in my tire and didn't check the tire pressure. After a spirited ride on the highway when I attempted to slow down and take the off ramp my bike was all over the place. By the time I got it off of the highway and stopped my back tire looked like a big old bubbly piece of pizza with blisters everywhere.

This is not to say that Michelin might not have a problem but this type of tire damage can also come from riding on a very underinflated tire at speed generating high temps in the tire carcass causing the type of failure that guy described.

To answer your question, no I have not heard anything about Michelin having problems with a particular tire.

You are getting paranoid. I have no idea what the H2 designation means, but I've been running a set of the Pilot Powers on my bike for about 700 miles so far, and have been putting them through some very spirited riding. I have had no problems with them thus far. I might add that they are the best tire I've tried so far.

Yah there are lots of people on these tires doing fine.

Any tire will get F*cked up if you don't maintain the pressure though...

damn!!! he called me "idiot" after i told him what Karaya One said.

"Your tire expert must not be very smart, you are saying no such marking as a michelin pilot power H2? So the tire I have in my garage is not real then? I suppose you would like to come over and see it!!!!!!!!!! Idiot!!!!!!!!!!!! As for any tire doing what I described? I suppose its possible, but I can say after 12 years of street riding and racing, that no tire has ever done that to me before or since!!! All I was trying to do was give a guy a heads up, if you talk to anyone who knows what the F they are talking about they will tell you that the H2 was not that great of a tire, thats all I am saying, buy any of the newer ones, In fact to the best of my knowledge the H2 has been discontinued, due to tire failure!!!!!!!"

This guy is a moron of the HIGHEST order. He needs to trade in that ZX-10R for a Schwinn soonest.

There is NO SUCH TIRE as a Pilot Power H2. I know, since this is what I do each and every day - sell race tires!

Furthermore, the S2-M2-H2 series PILOT RACE 2 was cancelled due to the end of its development cycle. Michelin France stopped production of this tire in June of 2004. Production of this tire was split between France and Spain.

Brainiac here says nothing about pressure run, conditions run, how it was mounted, etc. I have sold THOUSANDS of RACE 2's and never has one done what he has said. Just that it is BAD. Let us all be thankful he isn't actually involved in development.

If he has a tire that says PILOT POWER RACE H2, I will send him a FREE set of POWER RACE in his choice of dual compound. I'm sure Michelin USA would love to see this one-off tire, produced in secret and sold only to ZX-10R riders.

    twit.

    umm...

Karaya One, what is this Sales Manager talking about?

    "Straight from michelin north america...

    Sean

I had the opportunity to view some the messages on your message board this morning particularly with the discussions about Power Race tires.

It seems their is some confusion even in our ranks...so to set the record straight I have prepared a sheet for you to identify what tires are designed for street vs track. ( See Attachment).

    In Short...
Pilot Power is the premier street/trackday tire, other great trackday tires are Pilot Sport Cup and Pilot H2.

Power Race Soft, Power Race Medium offer very limited use on the street (20%)...these are real race tires! Most riders will go faster on these tires than the S2/M2 from last year.

Power Race Medium Soft, PR1- PR5 are 100% race track due to complex compounding which do not work well on the street.
This type of tire was only available last year to the very top riders. For 2005 all racers have a choice because these tires are available to everyone.

I hope this helps clear up the confusion on your chat room.

    Regards
    Ron Wood

Now that we got that cleared up....
...I've been on a set of Powers for about 3000 miles, and they ARE the best tire I've ridden.

    Mine are holding up great.

Ron Wood is MISTER Michelin. He runs all US competition programs for two wheel for Michelin USA.

He basically explained the differences for the average street rider.

The other guy had no idea what he was talking about.

If you have a problem with Michelin's, or just don't like the tire I can deal with that. Try the Dunlop or Pirelli. But, to go on a message board and claim they are junk and that this is why the tire is no longer made is just ignorant.

Also - if he was rational about this in the first place, I would have gladly REPLACED that rear tire with another - FREE! Michelin does want to see stuff like this.

I'm immersed in race tires all day long lately due to all the regions first events and track days. We are still selling Race 2's and lots of new Power Race's. The last time I had a tire do what he said it did was a Race One Soft. And this was from overheating the casing, causing the tire to peel off its contact patch.

The cause? Extreme wear amplified by low air pressure.

I would be happy to bring some of these to our next trackday if you want to see it.

doesnt the letter designation (H2, M, S) declare the compound of the pilot race tires. S=soft M=med H=hard?
I personally run Dunlops but I have ridden on Mich's on other poeples bikes with the H's and M's and what have you and I thought they were great. But the new powers are awesome!!
I rode a friends race bike at a trackday with powers on it and without tire warmers i left the pit and was at full tilt dragging knee by turn 3. Come to find out later that they were just the street compound so i can only iagine how good the race ones are.

H2, M2 and S2 denote HARD, MEDIUM and SOFT.

Michelin will NEVER label another race tire H ever again. Sales of the tire were poor, even though the H2 is softer than the older Sport.

The most durable compound in the new dual-compound Power Race is called MEDIUM.

The new Powers and Power Race's are amazing rubber.

A member of another board that I go to has said that there is word of an upcoming recal on Pilot Powers. Any truth to this?

I know that he is most likely spreading false information, so I just wanted to get an answer from someone on the inside.
