I've never found a good route from Freeport west toward NH until you get fairly close to NH. The roads just aren't all that interesting and the lakes make for frustrating routing (one of those classic "you can't get there from here" situations). Once you get within 10 miles of the border, the routes get pretty interesting though. 153 is a classic. I rode it on Saturday and it's in good shape for the most part. My advice would be to draw a staight line from Freeport to Fryeburg and then follow it as closely as possible. You will zig zag like crazy and pass through countless little towns, and that can be fun despite the lack of curves. Once in Fryburg, follow Randy's Route to 153, and 153 all the way to Sanbornville.

That seems to be an issue. For a state that modeled its roads around deer paths, they are pretty straight.

I don't have problem finding crooked roads in Maine, I just have problems finding ones that at relatively free of frost damage that are fun to ride
