    another nail in tire thread

bah....so i was about to head up to rt 9 today when i stopped for gas and noticed this in my tire.
i know that i shouldn't mess around with nails in tires, but can't decide if it's a mortal wound or just sticking through the rubber....was hoping to get another couple thousand miles out of these things...any thoughts?

I'm all for plugging tires and riding them, full lean, dragging knees, 3 plugs in the rear one in the front, but if I saw that in my tire I would probably send for a truck to get me home and junk the tire.

Bummer that it hit the rim too. It is certainly going completely through the carcass, twice!

Plugging a puncture wound in the tread is no problem at all. You will have to ask someone else about repairing the sidewall as I'm inclined to say you are SOL on that one.

No sweat. Just plug it from the inside ONLY. Those "plug from the outside" plugs are not for moto tires. Many shops won't plug at all due to the liability (take that for what it's worth).

That said, I'd toss that fucker in the dumpster. A little tack is one thing. A 10d creating two holes is something different.

Take that tire off the rim get a wire brush and rough the inside of the tire up. Go to autozone and get some radial patches and patch it from the inside.

Or let me knwo when I can pick the tire up so I can patch it and ride it.

If you want, i have a takeoff with a hole that can be plugged. The meet is great, if not for the nail I would have definitly had a few races left in it before it went to the street. I'd let it go pretty cheap. KB is crazy if he wants that tire, but I can give it to him for you too. Maybe have him mount the tires as a fee?

I had a cage tire once that had a nail go thru looking like than. But it did not puncture the inside at all

if that is the case with this tire, pull the nail and ride it BUT

if it punctured the inside, trash that tire, the puncture on the tread side is pluggable, but not the sidewall puncture

Thats a good point Randy. It looks like it went through but you may be lucky and it is only in the rubber.

yeah, that's exactly what i was thinking when i posed the question. i guess i'll have to pull it off the rim to figure out if it's just in the rubber and how much rubber there is between the nail and the inside of the tire...

Either way let me know how I can pick up your old tire when it comes off. I'll run that fucking thing.

well, it turns out that it was only a surface piercing....the nail didn't penetrate into the tire. now i have a fresh pair of qualifiers on the bike and a set of 'spares'....
