    So I Rode A Harley...

While we were out in Laguna Beach, CA this past weekend we had an opportunity to rent a Harley for a bit. Cheryl & I have been talking about getting some sorta big-ass cruiser for a second bike for a while now and I gave her my word I'd look into a Harley (I know, I know)...

In a nutshell: NO FUCKIN' WAY!!! We had a 2004 Fatboy with less than 10,000 miles on it that seemed to be well preserved. But what a piece of total shit the overall ride quality, fit & finish, and build quality was. Riding the Pacific Coast Highway was in and of itself pretty fuggin' cool. It was just a shame that we were on a bike that felt so unnerving to ride...

    More later...

    I resemmble your remarks!
When I rented the V-Rod out in CA it was only pleasurable because of the scenery! The bike sucked!

I will never own a Hardley Ableson....

    So I Rode A Harley...

I think there's so many Japanese cruisers WAY better than Harleys...not even "Harley knock-offs" anymore, they've surpassed Harley in design, performance, quality. Harley just keeps spitting out the same bikes year after year. I was just looking at Yamaha's website..check out the Warrior Midnight edition. Pretty sweet. Only bike Harley makes I really like is the Vrod, but it's obviously big $$.

    So I Rode A Harley...

    I hear ya.
I have ridden several over the years, and they never fail to not impress me. While I applaud their efforts to make them reliable, they never give me a woody on purely objective merits. They truely are the embodiment of the miracle of american marketing. Let's package a pile of poop in such a way, so as everybody wants one. When I was an MSF instructor, I often asked students what they were thinking of buying. More often than not, they would say "A Harley!!". I would ask them if they had looked at anything else. Often they would look at me like there was something wrong with me. {Maybe} This at a time when there is an absoulutely incredible amount of great performing bikes available in just about any niche you care to choose. Oh well!
    So many bikes,,,so little money.

I agree, the Yamaha cruisers are the best. Vmax, Warrior, hell even the new Roadliners

    So I Rode A Harley...

Yep.. rode a Dyna a couple weeks ago.

Scary in every way. So loud I felt like I was being irresponsible, but I never went over 35mph. Absolutely NO power.

Steering was typical cruiser bad. Suspension was horrible, ergos were horrible. (It's my neighbors bike and he's selling it cause it's uncomfortable) Clutch was pretty good, brakes downright scary. (Single disc in front, huge rear brake)

I like the Honda VTX, looks like a beefier Harley, but way more reliable.

Aren't you glad you got that out of your system for cheap.

Don't tell anybody but the average motorcyle buying
demographic is the shallow end of the gene pool.

Over 1/2 of ALL motorcycles sold in the USA are Harley's. I am personnally waiting for the great crunch when the used prices drop by 2/3. The first smell of the next recession and we are there. They will be on the front lawns of America like Mushrooms and HD will go bankrupt 2 years later.

fuck the Rocket, that bike sucks. Its huge and heavy, and I cant stand the looks of it. It only won its shootout with the Vmax because someone Motorcyclists managed to get the slowest Vmax in the history of the bike. And the Rocket still only won by .2 seconds

    Rich
Harley could not have sold 1/2 the bikes in the US last year.
They only produced 385000 bikes and well over a million where sold.
    #'s don't work.
Maybe half in the cruiser market.

Have you operated a Rocket III yet? They are an absolute blast to ride. It is a heavy bike but I thought it was very easy to control. While it doesn't make the horsepower of my 12R, it does make nearly 60% more torque and it is an awesome feeling to wack the throttle open when nearly idleing along and have a bike that heavy literally rocket down the road.

The Vmax is also a great bike but it fills a different niche in the cruiser market then the Rocket III. I'm surprised Motorcyclist even compared the two.

Sounds better than my trip up the PCH in a V6 hyndai. Made the trek from San Diego to San Fran this summer. At least it had autostick.

I rode a friends Harley once and almost killed myself . I unrealistically expected the brakes to actually be able to slow me down . What a pig it was .

It obviously didn't have the Screamin' Eagle "kit". That makes 'em wicked pissah fast. You can measure the "improvement" with a decibel meter.

Yeah I rode one once for about 5 minutes. Its definately fast for a cruiser, but Ill take my Max anyday. I rather have a bike that is faster, or equal in speed and weighs a ton less.
