    Rust in tank

I know someone asked this question a while back but i couldn't find it in the history.
I have a tank with alittle surface rust inside. Nothing to serious, no pitting. Is there anything "i" can do to get rid of it or should i have a pro do it. If the pro is the way to go does anyone know of a place that will do it.
I was thinking of taking it to a radiator place and having them acid dip it. Opinions?

a Radiator shop will ruin the paint. If it's surface rust, Rinse it with BB's and kerosene. Then paint thinner. If it's scaly you might consider getting it coated.

    Re: Rust in tank

I'm not worried about the paint i have to repaint it anyway. I was reading some articles that said the same thing you just said. I'll give that a try.

It's not allot of rust. There was a little around the gascap opening...i rubbed it off with my finger and it was gone. I took the petcock off and looked inside with a flashlight. No rust anywere but the bottom of the tank. There are some chemicals out there i can try. Pour it in and let it sit for a couple of hours. Rince repeat a few times. Before i spend a bundle on stuff i think i'll try the sand and beads method. Hope it works. Thanks for the input.

If it wipes off with your finger, I'd run some thing through it and use a good filter. I wouldn't even go with the BB's

This is what i was trying to aviod. Paying $50 for something then shipping. I'll go the cheap route first and see what happens. This does seem like good shit though.

    CYCLE TANK REPAIR KIT-POR-15 Inc.

the best stuff ever. i've used it with incredible results in a tank that sat half full for 10+ years. if you look at all their products their is a heavy duty cycle kit as well, but that may be more than you need.

    Re: Rust in tank

My other concern is when i put this stuff or any stuff in the tank will it flush out all the way. I've drained tanks before to paint them and for the life of me i can never get all the gas out. It seems like some of it sits in the Reserve area and won't come out. I know these products are designed for this purpose. But it makes me nervous to think the gas will be contaminated and fuck the bike up.

LOL, think what you want... I work with metal all day long. I know what works. We cut steel parts on wire EDM's all day long that are subjected to water coolant. The surface gets rusty. We use this shit to take the rust off. Steve knows I aint a bullshitter...... steve knows me all too well!

    Re: Rust in tank

unless the rust is really light, don't waste your money on the cheap stuff. It will get the rust of but as soon as the tank finishes drying out it will all rust right back up again. I went through this earlier this season before I ended up going the kreem route.

    Re: Rust in tank

I play around a lot with old bikes.. and coting the tank can be tricky.. I have read that this stuff is the best.. I had no luck with the Keem.. But the tank I has was awful.

    http://www.damonq.com/TechSheets/Red-Kote.pdf

There is a small Norton shop I believe it is in Nashua NH off exit 6 Rt3 That sells some good stuff too, I am not sure the name of the product but it easy to use 1 step process according the the guy at Hudson Yamaha.
but I never made it there. I have a few tanks I should realy get done next year. Be sure to install an inline filter
