A Sad, Sad Day Today, Doh!

Well, its official, the 929 officially got put into heated storage (55F) for the winter. The forecast looks damn cold for the weekend and that means the start of ski season. Battery is out, Sta-Bil in, oil changed....etc...

Well on the positive, taking everything off of the insurance except for comprehensive saves $$$ which pays the bike off this month too! Yippy no payments! I hate making payments on something I can't use!

    Randy;
Are you waiting for them to come out with a 2 wheel drive bike????

While your out riding - dodging snowplows and cars with road salt and ice patches, I am out saving victims of skiing. I live an hour north of you, so winter comes just a little earlier, not to mention being over 1500 feet in elevation.

most places are starting to make snow this weekend especially given the forcast for Sat and Sun high is in 30's around town. The mountains should be in the 20's.
Waterville hopes to be open by Novem. 9 to 16th. Killington should be open later this weekend.

I hear ya, Todd. This is the first time in my life I'll be "winterizing" a bike I've owned. This is also the first time my wife is letting me keep the bike IN THE HOUSE! Hee hee, yip. The first thing you'll see this winter when you walk into my house is gonna be that beautiful TL-R...

So NEXT weekend, I'll be taking the same steps as you: Wash, wax & polish; erl change; battery out & on the trickle; treat the gas; blah, blah, blah...

Oh shit! That reminds me! I've gotta do the boat too! Fuck!

Oh, and trust me when I tell ya Randy doesn't need two-wheel drive. I've got photos of him at my house ON HIS BIKE the day after 6+ inches of snow!!! Plus, he's got those cow-shit tires on his SV now and from what I understand, they're damn good in the snow too!

I don't know if I'd go so far to say their "damn good" in the snow, certainly better than street tread, at least they provide some traction and I can spin my way up my driveway and not have to push, they do provide excellent traction on cold (sub freezing) pavement.

The theory is that oil change before storage removes all the junk and makes sure that engine parts are soaking in fresh clean oil (not the stuff that is broken down to crap) for a few months. If you did an oil change a few hundred miles ago you do not have to change it.

    HTH.

I think that oil breaks down when the engine is running so if it sat all winter there is no need to change it again in spring.

As for battery, I had it in the basement all winter without charger and in spring just filled it up, charged it and it was fine. If you have a trickle charger you can leave it on, or just turn the charger on every couple of weeks for a day should keep the battery in top shape.

Actually, dunno where I heard it, but they say change the shit again in the spring.

I think its so that all the cripe that comes off when "soaking" all winter doesen't then get put back through the engine. Makes sense I guess.

Winterizing the 929 - glad I got the WR this is gonna be a funnn winter No more job! No more chick! One more toy!

Winterize already? Temps next week are going to be in the 60s. Most years I winterize the bike mid-November. This year I will be winterizing a bike I haven't even seen yet. I can't wait for the new 998 to come in.

Mick, fill tank with gas, add sta-bil fuel stabilizer to keep gas fresh, change the oil before storing, (very little stuff falls off from 'soaking' so no critical need to change the oil before riding in the spring -- they recommend changing BEFORE storing since the acids in the used oil can erode engine parts. Remove battery and put on battery tender. Spray engine with WD-40 to prevent rusting. Spray light coat of wax on body work. Spray some paper towels with WD-40 and stick into exhaust pipe(s), cover with sandwich bag(s) and tape or rubber band. This prevents rodents from making a nest in your pipes...they dislike WD-40 too.

Alternatively, you could just sell your bike and avoid all this stuff.
