No, I don't have an "edited" bill of sale...I wanted to, but....
Wouldn't you know! I just came back from the RMV. That woman didn't even LOOK at the bill of sale! And she asked me "how much did you pay for the motorcycle?" So I tell her "$3000.00" and she quickly tells me "it's gonna be $215.00 total please" I'm like, you don't go by BOOK VALUE?? And she says "No, we go by what you paid for the vehicle" So basically I COULD HAVE told her I paid $1000 for the freakin bike and she would have charge me taxes on that instead of $3000.00!!!!![]()

Doesnt work like that. If you told them 1000 chances are they would have looked up book value and if it were higher they would charge you tax on that instead. Its happened to me in the past.Originally posted by MissTwisties

Yeah they definatly looked at the title when I went. Luckily the guy I bought from left the 'sale price' block empty![]()
The actual DMV regulation is along these lines:
Purchase price or book value, which ever is higher..........
IME:
Car purchase $1200 (13 years old)
Commonwealth decided the book value was $5000 and I paid based on the 5K.

I was kind of posting this in reference to your other thread where you were bewildered that you had to pay tax on buying a vehicle.
Welcome to Taxachusetts.
Hey, could be worse, you could live in NY where sales tax is 8%?? Or is it 7?

Sales tax in NY is different for different parts of the state. It all depends on where you live.Originally posted by JeffL
