The downsides are a slightly larger stator, and you get to map it via a PC/middle man box depending on the setup. Would I want EFI on my end of days Apocalypse steed, no. Do I want it on my play toy heck yes!

I think his bike was a 250 but has a 300 jug on it now. Those bikes are fully interchangeable and use the same carb and pipe.
Edit: boxmonkey said he'd be there too, and has a 200. I know he likes beer so pack a cooler.

Ya'll caught me at a low point in production.. or a high point in consumption. Depends on your point of view. Not much in the cooler these days. But I know my way to the store.

Some vintage 2t action from yesterday.
    Bike is a beautifully restored 77 pe250.
The other pe250 that takes off in the beginning is ridden by a former A rider, and has the full ohlins treatment and the dude legit shreds that thing.
    Watch till the end.

    Re: School me on: 2-strokes

Chip did his job, back in the 2-stroke camp.

The KTM 300 was wonderful, with or without the cheater clutch. Way mo' easy to pick along than I expected. I imagined handling the clutch that much would get old. What I didn't account for was the hydraulic clutch. So, so, so much easier to handle than the cable clutch on most of my machines.

Also rode the 250. Maybe it's in my head, but I can feel the lighter weight. This may be my fav of right now. Although I would not throw a 300 out of my garage.

All were light years easier to ride than my DRZ.

Now wondering if a 200 would be too little for my overgrown-ness. But the 250 was pretty easy to handle.. so really, probably good 'nuff. And the upgrade path to a 300 should I somehow become a more better rider makes the 250 more attractive anyway.

I think you should just come ride my 125 so you can firmly decide that the 250 is the right bike.

As part of the higher cost of entry, KTM gives you an outstanding clutch.

When my fat ass was a fat ass.... The 200 KDX was still my woods weapon of choice, now that my ass ain't so fat, it's still my woods weapon of choice... A 250/300 2smoke would be orgasmic/premature ejaculation...

I'm sold on the idea of going big with this purchase. In a fit of selfishness, I have decided that "I've earned" buying something top-ish shelf. Late model KTM or bust! All cheaper options need not apply on this one. Dirt riding is one place where I see the value in better bits.

    Re: School me on: 2-strokes

I'm leaning towards a used 250 XC or XC-W. I don't think I really care about the differences between the XC and -W. But I'm wondering how far back I go.

Big changes in frame and suspension in '12 or something? Better e-start for '14 or something? Any of this right?

What's the oldest KTM 2-stroke you'd buy and why? What years were there significant upgrades?

    Re: School me on: 2-strokes

    What KTM should I buy?

    See forums^^

Anyway, onlything from 04+ has just seen minor updates every few years. The major changes are the new 4cs forks for the XC's. 14+ e start works, the others kinda sucks. To me the big decision is between gettign a PDS or linkage bike.

    Re: School me on: 2-strokes

Can't view ktmtalk. Can't auto register because I use gmail. (Doesn't everyone?!?!) I reg'ed through the request process. But apparently I have to be manually accepted because whatever whatever.

Looks like the 4CS and linkage was a 12+ thing.
Frame redesign in '10 gave it a taller shock mount and "improved" PDS.

    I'm thinking '10+ or bust, '12+ preferred.

I'm not sure the weaker pre '14 e-start is a deal breaker. And it looks as if it can be upgraded if I'm wrong.
