Always had Japanese sport bikes. Never could afford the Duc. Bought a Streetfighter S and fell in love. The thing was a blast. Then I rode a Panigale. It was all over but the crime. The Panigale is home and the Streetfighter is at Seacoast looking for a new home. I just can't see myself owning any other brand of sportbike.

Just my two cents here:

I bought a 2011 monster 796 from seacoast sport cycle (best dealer experience I've ever had btw). The bike is so simple and light. Great for real world riding. Would be a good bike to begin on with plenty of room to grow. The service intervals have spread out as well. I'm not sure what they were on earlier ducatis but min is every 7500 I believe.

With that being said, some of the fit and finish is sub par IMHO but I can live with that.

It's been my experience too that the Ducati community, especially in New England, is great. They are a pretty tight knit group, and really willing to help each other out.

Get a 2v air cooled monster. Older 900 or newer 696/1100, I'd avoid the old 600/750 because they are kinda blah. S2r 800/1000 are wicked.

As stated, the air cooled monsters are comfy, sporty, look badass, and are reliable with low maintenance costs. Water cooled 4v's are reliable too, but require more upkeep that you may not be able to tackle yourself.

I have a carbed 750, it's jetted, open airbox and has a feracci exhaust on it, 14 tooth sprocket. It's not the fastest bike I've ever ridden, but it's torquey and fun as hell. It wont hit 180mph, but it does do 100+ with ease.

I have an older Monster. It's been pretty reliable for its age. I did have a couple of shorts that were easily found and fixed. I have over 35k on mine and it actually runs better now than when I got it at 11k. Degsy did some good work on it last year.

30-40K is just about when that engine is fully settled in and at its best. That's when mine stopped changing, and I was able to double the interval of valve checks (from 5-6K to 10-12K) after that.

Phil's right. After about 12-15k the valves don't go out of adjustment much. 12k between adjustments should be fine. Always do belts at the same time of course.
