    Which scooter/moped would you buy?

. . . if you were to buy a scooter.

    Anticipated uses:

    1. 1-2 mile trip to the gym.

    2. 1-2 mile trip to the subway station, where it would be parked (hopefully chained to a bike rack or somesuch) during the day.

    3. Cruising around various tracks at trackdays or LRRS weekends.

I did see bOxmonkey's relatively recent thread on this subject (in which the Zuma, etc. were discussed), but am interested in any other suggestions as well.

Note that answers such as "bicycle", "I wouldn't", "your mother rides a scooter" and the like will be deemed non sequuntur and likely met with derision from members of the community.

Thanks. I've seen a few of these in Boston. Seems to have the style factor won, and I like the small displacement (despite the changes in scooter laws, it seems that some people are still able to get away registering it as a moped, so that would at least give me a chance).

I just picked up the zuma a few weeks ago, got an '09 for $1000. Great scooter, 110 mpg. I would have prefered the ruckus for the simple fact that its a honda but try and find one for less than 2K. NOTE: when you register a scooter be prepared to lie about the top speed so you can register it as a moped! $40 for two years, no insurance or inspection.

I used to have a Zuma, it was great. Quick for a 50cc, looked cool and was very reliable. I had it for about a year and a half and had zero problems with it. When I stored it for the winter, I didn't do anything to winterize and it started within a couple of minutes after sitting for 3 months.

Noted on the top speed. Glad to hear that it's still possible it is as a moped. Did you find the Zuma on craigslist or some other way? The Ruckus does seem to carry quite a premium.

    Aprilia SR50, no question.

I've had my eye on one for a few years, but it just doesn't fit with my 20 mile hwy commute.

    That's a cool scoot. Wasn't even on my radar, but I'll look into it. I see it's a 2-stroke.

Got it on craigs. If you see a deal, move quick! I missed out on a few. There's a lot of people in the market right now. BTW, the cube or C3 is pretty cool too, same basic thing as the zuma just a different design. Not nearly as many on the market though.

Re: Which scooter/moped would you buy?

I had a Ruckus and commuted on it for about 8 months, close to an hour each way, and it is without a doubt the best way to get around the city quickly. Personally, although the Ruckus wins for style, it's still a scooter with limited use and still pretty dorky, so I wouldn't pay the "Ruckus Premium" again.... I'd just get a used and ugly but not mechanically abused Metropolitan or Zuma and rat-rod it out with stickers, maybe strip the plastic, etc.

Another vote in for the Ruckus. Less plasticky stuff to brake.

quick thing about mopeds, I believe there can be city ordinances against them. I know in peabody, they made one when I was younger. I could be wrong and I'm sure if I am i will be corrected by 7 members here.

    Vespa GTS250 / 300 ie.

See a lot of them at my Vespa shops. Very reliable, can do highway if needed for short blasts, excellent round town commuters. Good power, four stroke.

Aprilia SR50 Ditech is the high end option, but pricey. Yamaha Zuma is the other 2-stroke with a great aftermarket. All the 50cc 4-strokes are shit, but most have big brother 125cc versions with nicer fit and finish / better brakes.

Just as FYI, Buddy's are manufactured by PGO in Taiwan, marketed in the US by the Genuine Scooter Company out of Chicago. Great scoots, but they aren't made in the U.S. Yes, I own a Buddy 150, and no I'm not a dork(nor a girl). Probably the most practical vehicle, two or four wheeled, that I've ever owned.
