Resolution ? Keep the loud pipes, but don't rev the fawk outta them.
I'd rather be distracted for those 20 seconds and have someone's life saved than having the exhaust converted into silencers and a 16 year old girl, texting while putting on makeup giving 3% attention to the people in the other lane swings over and hitting you while only the thoughts of " what if my exhaust was loudeR" linger for the months of immobile healing that soon await. ( Longest run on sentence........ever)
Cool story bro! I think I'll get open pipes too since I'll be safer and all!

Oh, wait. If there are even two of us making a lot of noise, no one will be able to hear anything and everyone in the area will be less safe. Guess that's why even 84% of Harley owners (in a recent poll on HDforums) think loud pipes suck.

Plus, its just a loud omni-directional noise. Take things like police or fire sirens in downtown Boston. Sure, you can hear it - but you cant hear where the hell it is coming from. People manage to plough into police cars, fire trucks all the time.

Good for them! 106db is absurdly loud for the street.

Ever been to a stock car race?

Noise levels measured during the race ranged from 96.5 to 104 dB(A) at 46 meters (~150 feet) from the track and 99 to 109 dB(A) at 6 meters (~20 feet) from the track. The peak sound pressure level at 6 meters was 109 dB (A).

    106db is loud enough.

My 1098 pipes are 103 and they are barely bareable.

The problem arises when they try to lower the limit below 98.
