Best way to secure a trailer?

Obviously theives will get it if they're determined enough, but.... now that my trailer is in a spot where it's a lot more visible and accessible I'm brain storming "insurance" options to make it more of an inconvenience to jack it.

    - Option 1: chain through two rims... but standard 5 lug wheels are easily swapped. Regardless, what's the best chain lock?
    - Option 2: a coupler lock.. but a thief could just use the chains to pull it away. Regardless, what's the best coupler lock?
    - Option 3: a hidden switch that disables my electric winch... but that could always be found.

Ultimately I'm thinking bout goin w/ two (or all) of the above or all three. Maybe options 2 & 3 since they're quick & convenient.

Other options? Can't chain to immovable object.

    You mean a coupler?

Don't think I can replace the coupler. Will have to check.

Best way to secure a trailer?

Locking wheel chock is a good start. Combine with a tongue lock. The key to theft prevention is to make it take too much time to be worth their effort. Also incorporate a locking cable, but feed it around the leaf spring. This way even if they unbolt the wheel they still have to cut a cable.

Trifecta of anti theft. Too much trouble to bother with.

Consider a basic motorcycle alarm. One that is set off by motion... That will help raise a stink if someone is messing with your shit.

I like the cable through the leaf spring idea..

Here is a rugged tongue lock.

Can you make an immoveable object? If it's on grass we can dig a hole and bury a cement block with a chain link in it. Then tongue lock and lock the wheels and frame to the cement block.

How are you going to stop them from cutting into it? I'd think most thieves would be interested in a quick grab of the contents and not grabbing the whole trailer.

Entire race cars have been known to disappear from trailers in a hotel lot overnight in Tremblant for example.

Re: Best way to secure a trailer?

Some other things you can consider are putting up security lights in the area that you park your trailer, maybe put in a fence that you can lock of the area, and if you go the route of locking wheel chocks if you can back the trailer up close to a building so that they can't open the rear door. If you have a side door it might be hard to block that as well but at least it will make it a little more difficult for the thieves. I like the idea of an audible alarm, but not sure how effective that is if you live in an area that people would actually take action if they heard an alarm go off. Also I think I've heard of a device that you can put on your bike that uses gps to track it in the case it ever gets stolen, maybe they make something for trailers, if you could run it off a small solar panel on the roof of the trailer it could be powered indefinitely. I would imagine something like that would have an app for it that sends you a message on your phone if what you were trying to protect was ever removed from your property.

If you still can't sleep at night you could always hire private security...

Re: Best way to secure a trailer?

i think if you go with 2 or more options then youll be ok. most thieves are prepared to conquer 1 or 2 devices (cut a chain, change a wheel or 2 or get past the tongue lock) but usually not all.
chain or cable through the wheels and something solid on the trailer (like the suspension) is a great idea. an alarm for the door isnt a bad idea either. maybe one of those bike cover alarms on the inside of the door.

    Bring a bolt on hitch...

Also defeats a hitch lock on a bolt on hitch.
