I'll take the R1 off your hands for a month or so, as a favor to you so you can see what life is like without a streetbike

+1 on a thruxton. i was in the same place a year or so ago and decided to make my daytona track only. i bought a thruxton for the street. looks good. doesnt have to much power, but does have enough to have fun, and has rear sets so you can still throw it around a bit. stock suspension is rough so you will want to upgrade that but besides that its a solid, fun bike. i went on 2 tours around NE/NY the last 2 years plus my weekend trips with it and it was a blast.

My problem with any kind of cruiser is I know I'd skip the gear. And that has it's own problems.

Said it once, I'll say it again. Grom. Top speed is supposedly around 60mph, small enough to scoot around town and still put a big stupid smile on your little stupid face, I'm sure.

They are stupid fun. I was serious with my SV suggestion. After riding the R1, the SV is terrible at high speeds on the street, but you know as well as I that it is a very capable machine, street or track. It'll be fun enough, but the low end power means you won't be pushing the limits as much to have that fun. Or just take a season or two away from the street completely and see how you feel. You may be young, but you have a good head on your shoulders. If you didn't, you wouldn't have started this thread.

Lot of "fun" bikes that don't do a 0-Jail in 2.7 seconds. My newest bike is the slowest bike I've owned, but a blast to ride. And the sound is pretty nice, to me, my neighbors probably don't agree. I can't say I've had the self control issue much though, but never had a rocket like an R1 either.

MotoGuzzi Eldorado. Vintage yo, slows everything down. The whole thing is more engaging, more mechanical, more fun. People love to look at them. Any Guzzi handles pretty good for what it is. There's a great community that isn't always telling you faster! faster!

I drag metal parts on mine, it's east to do. Hustling an Eldo or T3 along a back road is 100% as fun, and less nerve wracking than any super sport.

Put a duel sport and a CB160 in the garage too. All for less than $10K

this is how i ended up on the 690. "cruising" home from work at 120+ on the SV1k without even realizing it made me rethink my bike decision. the upside to the 690 is on the highway i keep it 70 or under. the downfall is that it does 70 everywhere with ease. 35mph zones, 25mph zones, school zones, childrens hospital hallways...

    Re: What is Self Control?

I caught enough points on my 919 that when I found a DRZ400 at a good price I jumped on it. Wheelie hell! I might not do triple digit commutes home after work (why I parked the 919) but it's too easy to wheelie to keep the hooligan in me at bay. Then I found someone wanting to trade for a cbr250. It doesn't wheelie on demand like the DRZ. It won't do triple digit speeds, but it corners like nobodies business. I think it's still going to get me in trouble.

My method of self control: stay off the bike, or take it to an appropriate area (e.g. track)

I'm with you, the drz allows me to shift a whole bunch of gears and feel like I'm doing something. Yes it tops out at 95mph so you can do 80 in a 25 if you choose. Thing is, in that 25mph zone I've shifted three times - feel accomplished and like I'm riding a motorcycle (@35mph) rather then 90mph in second gear on a liter.

    Re: What is Self Control?

I too had a revelation the other day after riding my buddies Honda Shadow 750. It was slow and comfy but it was a ton of fun. I found myself focusing on how enjoyable the ride was rather than how fast I was going. It was honestly much more enjoyable than riding my GSX-R. It even had bags and a ton of wind protection, that was really nice.

I never thought I would see the day where I wanted an adventure bike, but here it is.

I now understand why a lot of people have a track/race bike and a cruiser or adventure bike or supermoto for the street.
