It's a legit thing to ask for. All bikes/cars on Ebay have the VIN listed in plain sight in the ad.

It is so he/she can check to see if the bike isn't stolen.

I don't think by giving out the VIN you would be opening yourself up to anything. On the flip side of that, holding the information might deter the buyer from pursuing the sale.

    my 2 cents

There isn't really much they can do with a VIN#. Anybody can walk up to your vehicle and look at one if they would like to. That being said I still don't think I would give it to anyone.

chris, he may have someone in LEO that can look up the VIN to make sure it's not stolen. honestly, i'd do the same thing if i was buying off someone i didnt know. i bought my gixxer off craigslist and the first thing i did was take a picture of the VIN stamp when i went to see the bike

Re: Selling my bike ,buyer asking for VIN?

DB, i have no problem if he came down here checked the bike and look at the VIN i would even show him the title so he can match it up ....was just a little weird that he asked where the bike was located and the VIN# ...

i was reading posts on a stuntboard a while back about people messing with VINs i just dont want this guy taking my vin and putting if on his stuntbike just so he can ride in a parking lot out in Montana or something

i told him he is more then welcome to come down and check the bike out and i asked him why he needs the VIN

Re: Selling my bike ,buyer asking for VIN?

i've seen a few posts on craigslist with sellers listing the VIN. i personally wouldnt give out that info. if they're asking for it, tell them to come look at the bike and get the VIN themselves.

+1 on the stolen thing and he also might want to use it to check the insurance.

I don't know if it's been said but...

Most insurance companies won't commit to a quote without the VIN#. He's probably trying to find out the cost of ins.

Re: Selling my bike ,buyer asking for VIN?

He's prolly looking for HIS stolen bike. Send him the VIN in an email, I'd be looking too if mine were stolen...

Your bike must match his exactly, year, make model displacement etc, that is why he wants to know where it is and the VIN only.

Send it to him to put his mind at ease.

    i always want the vin.

you'd be amazed at the info you can get from a vin.

why should someone have to come and get the vin in person off the bike?

Re: Selling my bike ,buyer asking for VIN?

Not giving the VIN, to me, would be like the multitude of sellers on craigslist that list something with no info about it, then reply to questions with "DO YOU WANT IT OR NOT, JUST COME SEE IT"

Then I move on to the next ad.

Re: Selling my bike ,buyer asking for VIN?

I work in a PD....normally people want the vin # to see if the bike has been stolen, damaged etc. As well as many insurance companies now are running vin #s to give you an exact insurance on the bike. I know my ins companies only wants the vin when requesting and ins quote bc then they dont have to get the info from you and they also check the stolen etc on the vehicle. Sometimes its also to double check to see if the vehicle has been in any type of accident as well.

Good Luck I'd give it to him...When I bought my bike I asked for my vin to give directly for the above reasons.

Re: Selling my bike ,buyer asking for VIN?

I don't quite get how you can check if a bike is stolen in general with a vin anyway. When I got my bill of sale I went to the local police station and asked them to run it. They said since it's not here in my posession yet they can't do that. I was like, what? I have to physically buy the bike and bring it over to the station, which would be illegally riding it there if not trailered, to check if I just bought a stolen bike? Sure...

I do get if they want to try to get a quote or match it to their own if looking for a stolen bike, but whatev.

If the other buyer wouldn't respond to your question, and didn't say why he wanted it, I'd be kinda sketched out too...
