Thumbs up Back on the horse. Sat ride report.

Well, I'm finally riding again. Went on a mini group ride w/ Mark (TLRMan) on his TLR of course, his brother Scott on his SV1000 and old high school buddy of mine, new rider & new NESR member Nick (ff36buell) on his brand new '07 Buell XB12ss.

We set off late Sat. morning, rode around for a few hours, watched MotoGP at my place, then rode some more. Did about 100-150 miles around the MA North Shore & a bit of NH. Hit some good roads & my wrist held up alright. Got a little fatigued, sore & stiff, but no real pain (other than when I brought Nick's bike down from a big ole whilly that thing's a wheelie machine if I've ever ridden one. That shit came RIGHT up just gotta work on my landings )

Also had to give Nick a little of the usual newbie hazing... hitting the cut-off switch when he wasn't looking or taking the key out of his bike & throwing it on the ground in front of him But I gotta admit, for only 3k miles under his belt, he did a pretty damn good job of keepin up w/ us w/o getting TOO far in over his head. He had me pretty nervous a few times as I'm lookin in my rearview mirrors to see him keepin right up w/ me when I was goin at a pretty hefty pace through some sweepers & on-ramps but he kept his shit together, so good on him TLRMan even led him into some corners pretty hot w/ me behind the two of em & I didn't see any panic braking, drifting wide or target fixation, he just kept his eyes on Mark's back tire & went w/ it. So keep up the good work, bro. Yer comin right along.

Anyway, that's all I got... Just glad I'm finally back on the bike & ridin hard after a little over 2 months of sittin on my ass wishin i was on the bike.

Sounds good Pete. Wait til you try braking into T3 or the bowl. The ole wrist will let you know what's what.

Yeah, right around there. I was walking right toward you guys as you made a left over the train tracks. One of you guys honked at some cager doing something dumb. I literally live 1/4 mile from there.

Yeah, that'll be interesting... I did some hard braking to see how it'd feel & it did alright but we'll see how it goes on the 12th.

Ah yeah... the blue hairs definitely had us outnumbered at that intersection... they had us surrounded us while people are goin 1mph though a green light... FUKIN GO!!!

I didn't realize you were so local. Mark's brother lives right around the corner from there. Let us know if ya wanna go for a spin sometime.

Yeah, that was me doing the honking...The friggen idiot PARKED his car on a green light...I terrorized him all the way down Brimbal Ave.

Nick! You gotta try the TLR... I haven't cranked on the Tiller in the upper RPM range to see how the fueling is....all I gotta tell you was I bounced it off the rev limiter in 5th, and shut it off around 9k (tach reads 10k) in 6th. Was perfect place, no cars or anything...I saw traffic about 1/2 mile away, and called that test session done. Yeah, it's got some more growl now since last year, and I'm pulling 2 teeth lower in the rear sprocket to boot. Your Buell has the torque, you jump me every time you get on it, and it takes a couple to catch up, but doing a 3rd gear roll-on with me in 5th is cheating! Shame the engine shuts off at 7000 rpms.
Was fun, will have to play again!

Pete was the only one to get to ride all 3 bikes, but it's still fun to saw thru the gearbox on the 600.

haha, ff36buell, i live in reading, so you're just up the road from me. we'll have to go riding when i *hopefully* have a new bike... should be 2-3 weeks

mark -- i talked to some guy at GBM and he said that they owned or were affiliated with the 3 other suzuki dealers in the area (cycles 128, everett, and billerica), so i doubt i could get any better deal than the guy at GBM quoted me.

i think i've found a good deal, though, so hopefully i'll be picking up an SV650S in the almost immediate future (2-3wk, which is not immediate enough, lol). we'll have to go for a ride, although i'm going to absolutely baby her through break-in (first brand new bike, gotta treat it right ).

So Mark i will give the TLR a shot next time we are out and you can ride my oversized dirtbike, um buell. I needed third, only way i could get the jump on you. I put another 100 miles on her last night, learned that cold tires, cold pavement can make things interesting, but that suspension is close to perfect. Oh and I'm probably going to stick with the Race ECM for my bike for now. Parts should be shipping this week.

Pete, all i remember is glancing back quickly and saying... "I have a headlight out" then realizing the headlight was pointing into orbit... haha and then i swore you were smiling like a cheshire cat through your helmet as you caught back up.

Spicy, go ahead and steal your girls 250 so we can get a ride in. I ride through Reading all the tme heading down to the Stone Zoo.

haha, i would, but it doesn't have tags and isn't insured/registered/inspected/or even titled for her, even though she bought it almost 2 mo ago :O. she's in hawaii right now, so i don't think she'll be getting that done any time soon, lol.

i usually blast around my neighborhood on it, but i think it needs an oil change and i'm not quite sure how to do that. on my katana, i just yanked the bottom and side fairings off (front was separate), but when i look at her bike, i couldn't even find where the oil filter was, haha. i think i have to take the entire front fairing off cuz it seems like it's a 1-piece . i'll try and take a look at it either tomorrow (4th of july off ) or this weekend

Aaron, these engines need a little more aggression on the throttle to cut the rings correctly. Do not let that bike idle for any length of time, except warming up, when you get it. It's still a baby thing, but don't overly Baby it.
I'll fill you in on the details once you get the new toy.

yeah, heh, i know not to do that... i meant as in just be really careful with it, but not like "omg must not exceed 5% throttle"...

i just figured i'd go quite gently on her for the first like 50-100mi, and then start riding how i usually ride, only on the conservative side (sub 5k or so, generally light throttle but no more than like 50%)... then after the oil/filter change, start ramping it up slowly (6k soft redline for 100mi, then 7k, then 8k, etc) and then eventually start riding it like normal (WOT 24/7 bwaaaahahahahaha only kidding).

and i'd try to keep her from idling as much as possible, anyways -- I WANNA BE RIDING, lol.

but yeah, estimated buy date is in 10 days... i can't wait, and it's gonna drag by so slooowwwllly, lol.

jim, as soon as i pick it up, we'll have to go for a cruise... just keep in mind i'll have to keep it at like 2/10ths - 3/10ths

Yup you wanna work the engine, and put a load on it, not crazily but vary RPM's and accelerate briskly. Low tension rings need combustion chamber pressure to push them out, and cut them in. No sustained high rpm stuff, just speed up, decel, speed up. If you hit the highway, very speeds every couple of minutes....The 1st 50 miles is when it does the critical stuff in the cylinders, and the rest of the break in is for your transmission, and other mating parts. Stay clear of full synthetic oils for at least 3-4000 miles.
