well had my new to me zx out yesterday. ripped up some local roads. did some high speed runs. just having a little funi'm heading home and the motor starts to cut out. i look at the miles i've ridden since i last filled up and its under hundred. so i'm thinking great i broke the fucking thing. i pull over hit reserve and it starts, ahh much better. but wtf! is that normal gas mileage? the vfr would go alot further per tank. i rode that just as hard to. it was injected and smaller but does it make that much of a difference?
also there's no fuel light on this thing so i had no idea i was that low. does one come on when reserve gets low?
Nope... there's no fuel light.
I've had my 7R start to sputter on my when I've hit around 100 miles too... other times it'll go further.
I pretty much always plan on filling up between 100-120 miles.

wow thats going to be ruff on those long summer rides. now i know how the rc51 guys feel. never skip a chance to top off the tank.
I wouldn't say it's normal to hit reserve at 100 miles, but it happens... it's usually 120 or higher.

think there's much difference between the 7 and 9 in mileage? admittingly i was running around a gear lower than normal listening to the hindel pipe and the high speed runs really suck the gas.
you running flat slides on that ?Originally posted by mikeb

You aint kiddin. My previous GSXR was WAY BETTER on gas than my '51.....
TL-R's checking in! Like the RC's, I never skip a chance to top 'er off. They way it's currently set-up, I'm looking for petrol when it hits 100 miles...
On track days, I'm filling it every FIFTY miles or so...

no stock set-up except maybe a jet kit. i guess i just ran it alot harder that i thought.
wow stoneman 50 at track days! got to pay if you want tp play i guess. twins are thirsty.
Even the miserly VFR will suck down gas like that at the track... last time I checked it was around 25mpg on the track.

How much do you guys usually end up paying in gas on track days?

If you're running pump gas, well under $20. It's not really a major component of a trackday cost.Originally posted by NinjaSwan

i guess it all depends how long you're out there too... Do your race bikes have gas lights or do you have to keep an eye on your milage too?
I'd like to come up and watch you guys race sometime.

We only run 8 laps in races, unless you do a GP race, which is 20 minutes long.Originally posted by NinjaSwan

I usually fill up my bike at the start of the weekend and don't worry about it. Others know exactly how much gas they need for a race, and put just a little more than that in it.

Some bikes have gas lights, most don't. It's not really a problem, as the longest you'll be out there in a race / track session is ~20 minutes. As long as you peer into your tank every few sessions during a trackday, you'll be fine. Right, pete?Originally posted by NinjaSwan

There's a trackday schedule here and this year's race schedule is here on the right side. Come up any time, specators are always welcome, and cornerworkers are greatly appreciated (and rewarded!).
also doesn't the VFR's have like a 5+ gallon tank? My 600rr gets around 30 to the gallon where as my 929 got like high 30's.... only because it revs much much higher.

Thanks!! What all does the Cornerworkers have to do? sounds interesting.

Yah the new VFRs have closer to 6 gallon tanks.
175-210 miles to reserve on the street usually. And the reserve is >1 gallon.
You hang out in a station by one of the corners at the track and use flags to warn riders of crashes or other hazards. They show you all about how to do that the morning of the trackday/race, plus if you do it at one of Tony's days you get a free lunch and $50 off a future track day. Which you'll undoubtedly be jonesing to do after a day of cornerworking watching all the bikes go by at mach 10 with their knees on the deck.Originally posted by NinjaSwan

now that their replaceing MTBE with ethanol, don't expect any improvements in fuel economy

What exactly is MTBE, what are it's effects, etc.. and what did it do to fuel economy & Octane?
Ethanol raises Octane.. anyone know if the fuel is rejiggered to ensure the same Octane with the new Ethanol formulation?
good old methyl t-butyl ether.....too bad it keeps showing up in groundwater.
it's used as an addivitive to gasoline to provide more oxygen and lower emissions
Googling:
MTBE:
- Toxic & carcinogenic, contaminates ground water more easily, dissolves into water and does not biodegrade
- Harder to make, takes more energy to make
- May have slightly better energy/volume or energy/mass
- Can be transported in pipelines
- Better in summer as it doesn't evaporate as quickly
Ethanol:
- Safer
- Easier to make
- Slightly less energy/volume
- Can't be transported in pipelines, must be blended at a later stage
- Better in winter
Differences in Octane boosting and Fuel economy should be negligible since MTBE/Petroleum and Ethanol/Petroleum are not blended in the same percentages. Both reduce emissions.
