    Sport Rider Safety Course

DoN (and maybe DoD wide? not sure) has mandated that all motorcycle riders in the Navy/Marine Corps take the BRC and now a second course, either the Advanced Rider Course (for cruisers/non-sport bikes) or the Sport Bike Rider Course. I am signed up for the SBRC on the 29th of this month and am looking forward to it (it's free!) and I'm hoping to relearn some things I may have forgotten about and learn some new things specific to sport bikes. All riders must supply their own motorcycle and obviously wear the appropriate PPE. BUT, I'm worried about laying the bike down... not that I think I will, just that I've consider the 'what-if?' My buddy took the course last week, and had a classmate drop his Hyosung. In the event that someone does drop their own bike, and since the course is required in order to be able to ride, is it the DoN's responsibility to pay for damages??? You MSF guys might be able to shed some light on it. I, for one, would be ripshit if I dropped it, incurred a decent amount of damage, and didn't get reimbursed for it.

I teach for the Army. You should have insurance to ride on base right? Guess what covers if you crash during a class.

Plus if you can't ride well enough to not keep your bike upright what is to say you wouldn't have done it on your own in a parking lot.

Seriously. Look at it this way. The could take motorcycling away instead of mandating you to take a class.

I'll look up the reg and quote it. Give me a minute.

Thanks Doc. I'm not griping about the mandate for the new course, like I said, I'm looking forward to it. I just dropped over $500 on new rubber so I can pass the safety inspection, so it better be worth it! I'm confident in my riding ability to not drop it... but hey, we wear PPE in case the unexpected happens right? Anything's possible! Some of the squids down here though, I'd like to know what their COC was thinking letting them ride...

You bring up a good point though and I am going to check into it.

Fort Hood is implimenting 3 courses you HAVE to take prior to ANY riding after deployment. The refresher course which is 1 day with your own bike going over the basics, the sportbike only class which they are using the simulator motorcycle program for 6 hrs since there was so many deaths at FT Hood from sportbikes these past few years and the 1 day ARC. If you are caught riding before completing the classes you are subject to UCMJ or if you were to die chances are your family would not recieve your life insurance. I think its kinda crazy because regardless of what you tell someone in a class they are gonna do whatever they want outside of class but i guess its just the Army trying to say the resorces and training was there. Fun...

its the DOD covering there ass saying....hey X amount of servicemembers are dying from motorcycle accidents. Lets cover our ass by saying we provided instruction to them.

But yea, I would think your insurance would cover you since its a riders course and not like a track day or anything of that nature

    Huh? What post?

Anywho, I just got back from taking the course today. Had a good time, picked up a couple new skills, and reinforced some old skills that may or may not have been slacking. As far as course content goes, I am slightly discouraged because it didn't really seem to be tailored ALL that much toward sport bikes, although there were some things that were clearly more relevant for sport bikes than cruisers. I think for the most part I had a certain image and expectation of what the course would cover and it wasn't quite what I had in mind. Nonetheless, it was a good course, the MSF instructors were good to go (even though one of them had to jump of his bike to save it from going down after doing a maximum breaking exercise ), and I got some compliments on the R1

    Re: Sport Rider Safety Course

If the course you took is anything like other "MSF" courses, it will be to focus on skills that are glaringly absent in accident studies. Granted, that can cover a lot of ground, but the course would lean in that direction, as opposed to working on skills to help you cut a better lap time, so to speak. From my experiences as an instructor, the MSF courses are are a good way to build a solid foundation of skills. From there, more advanced race/trackday types of classes, take that foundation as far as you feel you need/want to.

well put Tabby. I'm slowly but surely growing closer to being able to do a trackday.

Dude, be very careful. Those damn trackdays are almost as much fun as sex! Ummm, I'll have to think a bit on that one. You know what I'm trying to say.

Maybe you'd have more fun with sex if you lasted longer than your lap time...

If you can ride on the street without crapping yourself, you can do a track day.

Seriously, all it takes is having the fundamental skills down. If you can start, shift, turn and stop w/o having to think about it, you can do a track day.

And IMO, the earlier the better. Less bad habits to overcome. Did my first Tony's event just 3 months after buying my first bike.
