Can anyone help with some painting me and need4speed will be doing tonight.
Race bike paint so it doesn't have to be perfect, but I don't want to make any stupid mistakes.
Rattle can? What kind of paint, can you get single-stage in a can or do you have to buy rattle-can clearcoat?
If I have to go with a gun, where can I buy paint to match the color I want (2003-2005 dodge ram silver-gray)?
Prep advice?
any help would be appreciated.
derek
I've bought paint from these guys
But if you want it now, just call the local autobody shop and pay the few dollar premium you'd pay to have them order it.
If you go the rattle car route, you'll want to do rattle can clear coat as well.
Cheers,
Chris
But when we ride very fast motorcycles, we ride with immaculate sanity. We might abuse a substance here and there, but only when it's right. The final measure of any rider's skill is the inverse ratio of his preferred Traveling Speed to the number of bad scars on his body. It is that simple: If you ride fast and crash, you are a bad rider. If you go slow and crash, you are a bad rider. And if you are a bad rider, you should not ride motorcycles.
Most autobody supply houses can mix what ever base color you want into a rattle can. Then you can use their rattle can clear to finish.
I have friends that have used this method to paint fiberglass parts to match their cars or trucks.
Dang! You got shocks, pegs... lucky! You ever take it off any sweet jumps?
Hey Derek,
You really should at least have some sort of paint booth with a filter and fan sucking air out of the booth. If you paint in a garage or any room with still air you are going to get all the dust particles from the air to settle on the paint and its kinda noticeable. If it doesn't have to be perfect then no big deal, but if you want it to look good you can build a make shift paint booth pretty easily.
I have painted bike plastics in the past both in a filtered painting booth and also just in a clean garage without the filtered booth and its a noticeable difference.
Good Luck
Hope it comes out nice!

I'm dropping my stuff off to a guy in your area Monday, and I think Heath's friend Brian's too. He's going to spray them for VERY short money. If you're interested I can PM you his number or talk to him for you. He has 4 booths and 12 years experience. Not sure if you're planning on painting your number plates but if you are it would be easy to split a quart of paint and have him spray them all on at once. We're all running white backgrounds right? If you're gonna rattlecan it I think there was a thread about it not too long ago that Dan posted. Something about the good spray cans with the metal nozzle. This link was posted as well.

It's all water under the bridge, and we do enter the next round-robin. Am I wrong?
Putting pretty paint on a race bike seems like bad karma to me.
Rattle can the fucker, Degs.![]()
wetsand.... that's my only suggestion if you rattlecan that hasn't been mentioned yet... it helps alot

I thought the wetsanding was kinda a given. Definately use about 3 different grades, maybe start with a 2000 grit with water and work up to a 3000 grit wet sand.
I'm no paiting expert, but have done this a couple times with people who knew their stuff.
...Once again its a race bike, even a bad paint job looks good going by at 100 m.p.h![]()

3 coats of rattle can base
3 coats of rattle can clear (make sure your 3rd coat is wet)
Don't spend too much time or effort in wet sanding or buffing because if you drop the bike or lay it down you'll be pissed you spent so much time on it![]()
If you have access to a paint gun and compressor, you could buy some Omni Coat paint from the paint supply house mixed to the color you want for cheap $. It is single stage so no need to clear coat over it.
Dang! You got shocks, pegs... lucky! You ever take it off any sweet jumps?
Thanks for all the advice.
I'm going to buy some paint pre-mixed and a cheapish gravity fed gun today and try this shiz tonight. We will probably just do the number plates with a rattle can.
Jay, If we make a complete mess of it I'll contact you for the guy's name and address.

Just remember paint likes warm temps and surfaces, and condensation is your enemy.
If Rattle Canning it -fill a dishpan with hot/warm water (try to sustain temp via hotplate if so inclined) and immerse cans in it prior to use + in between sprayings. It sounds lame but the paint atomizes 50 times better then "as is" out of the can. Also allows the gas inside to maintain pressure due to the thermal coeffecient of the reheating (this also aiding with the sputter/spray/atomization factor)
HVLP / Gravity Fed detail guns make a tough chore easy once you get the needle set for what your spraying.
-Moisture trap, even the 13$ one @ walmart will improve results dramatically. Bigger the tank/storage area for air, bigger the moisture trap. Multiples are ok too.
-Constant pressure is key, moreso when using a low psi gun. If you have a small portable air compressor (<6 gallons) and it doesen't have a fast recovery time (low scfm output) you can improve performance dramatically by adding one of the 'spare air' tanks (~7gallon portables you put in your trunk/whatever) to the chain of system. Run the regulator in the first tank high and maintain second tank mid level, then chain another regulator off to the line for the gun @ desired PSI.
then again, this might be a bit anal for race bodywork, but hey at least it's out there![]()
Rattle can all the way dude! Just make sure you buy the little plastic trigger that clicks on the top -- makes it easier to keep a nice steady spray going and avoids getting paint all over your finger!

We went with single-stage paint bought locally ($27 a quart).
I bought a spray gun from Lowe's ($98 ingersoll rand model) and we went to work in the plastic-walled 'booth' we set up in my garage.
Seemed to work quite well. Looks nice and shine. i had one or two slight ripples, but that was because I had to go a little think as we were gettinga little orange peeling as it was quite cold despite my 4 halogen lights.
I'll be doing Bryan's bodywork next week if he gets it in time.

Looks good, can't wait to see it all together......
My ride's
95 FZR 1000
19xx DOUBLE "D"
(sold) 02 CBR600 F4i (track bike)
06 Chevy Supercharged Cobalt SS
Looks good Degsy. We did that a few times. Did you do the numberplates? That's when the labor starts adding up, although single stage means no clearcoating, right?
This year I opted to have mine done by a pro, mostly because I trashed the bodywork last year and it need lots of new glass. Yuck, that's the worst part of the job.
Anyhow, Robbie Nigl of Peach Pit did a first class job. For the cost of new (unpainted) bodywork, he fixed mine and painted it to an incredible standard! It's like a show bike right now and I can't imagine trashing it again.
I left the front fender with the old, scratched up paint just so it's not 100% fresh. That's begging for a disaster!
Edit:
Duh, just saw the full images. Plates look good. Who's bike? And what are you riding this year
Plates were already yellow so I just had to mask them off.
The bike is the EX500 of John Basiuk (need4speed here).
I'll be racing the F4i agian this year. Had the shakedown test at VIR and she performed fine. I have a small oil leak to deal with and then she's ready for the first race weekend (unless they are using tight turn 10 in which case I'm going home as I think it's dangerous)

Anyone else get a kick out the fact that Degsy's wearing a shirt that's got VINTAGE printed across it?![]()
