I have my old laserdisc player, or is that 90's?? I always wanted to hang one of those bad boys from the rear view like people used to do with CD's.

Sweet! Special socket came in early, hopefully doing the steering head bearings tonight.

Man, what a PITA it is to get the rear wheel off....

Re: I present to you, SS LandWhale

I get bikes, and I make them right. That's my thing. I am not a polisher, washer, cleaner, detailer, etc. I don't mind my bikes dirty. But mechanically? They have to be right.

Got the front wheel bearings out last night thanks to my neighbors blind hole bearing puller. Steering stem is in the freezer with the new wheel bearings waiting for more of my free time.

Hoping to get it together by the weekend.

Re: I present to you, SS LandWhale

Just as I feared, right rear wheel bearing was toast and the hub where the bearing sits is fucked from wear. No wonder the PO tightened the shit out of the axle.

Two main things can/do go wrong on these bikes. Stator, which is fairly easy to test, and the rear bearing issue, which can't be tested for until you pull the wheel off the bike.

Looks like I'm in the market for a wheel.

I'd look for something so you can throw a 300 back there. Or a Michelin car tire, with studs.

Not sure of the exact situation, but can you use some green loctite to retain the bearing?
I've got a little bottle of 648 on my desk just gave me the idea.

I'd need to machine the wheel to assure centered bearing either way.

The "proper" fix for this is to swap a GL1500 rear wheel/final drive. They corrected the bearing offset issue by then.

If I can find a used wheel from an '86/87 GL1200 where the bearing hasn't spin or enlarged the hub, I could use the green loctite stuff when I install the fresh bearings.

I just fixed a honda 150 with this issue. I just cut a brass shim, wrapped the outer race, and tapped the bearing in. Bob's you uncle. without the shim the bearing just fell in/out of the boss.

We use 609 loctite when rebuilding gearboxes at work it will fill up to 0.12mm of gap between surfaces, Keeps bearings from spinning on shafts and mounts. Great stuff.

I considered that, wondering what size shim stock I'd need. I'll have to clean up the wheel and see what clearance I'm working with.

I bought a pack that had a variety from .001 up. I used the smallest size, and maybe could have gone up one.

I just found 3 quarts of Honda OEM coolant in my garage if you want them. Brand new and sealed. They are what the goldwing manual calls for for coolant
