Re: I present to you, SS LandWhale

Maybe in the near future I'll take you up on that offer via a voyage on the LandWhale.

Got the shim stock cut and wrapped around the bearing, then tapped in (some resistance, not a ton, not loose) to the hub with Loctite Green. Dried overnight, we'll see how it is today. Used .0015". Have .002, .003 etc if it's still too loose. Got a nice assortment of 6"x12" sheets of stainless on Amazon for $26.

Got the steering head bearings in, forks are mounted, just trying to get the self cancelling turn signal sensor hooked up. Quite the bear. It threads through the steering stem... and the connectors is halfway up the tube.

Depends on how today goes with shooting internet access from my roof to my neighbor 1/4 mile away without visual LoS, I might be able to get her all buttoned up and ready to go.

She's out of dry dock and back out to sea!

Rock solid handling (well, for the heft of such a rotund girl).

No head shake anymore. Yay for no more tank slappers into oncoming traffic!

Shifts easier (likely from less drag on the drive train from the way over-tightening of the rear axle to make up for the bearing slop).

Stops easier (new fluid all around).

Do you yell "Ahoy, mate. Land Ho!" every time you pull into your driveway?

    New rear bearing is trashed.

Guess I'll have to do the GL1500 rear end swap over the winter. Oh well.

How do you mean? the bearing itself failed? Or it came loose in the wheel boss again?

Not sure yet, wheel has a ton of play in it. Haven't opened it up, but I'm assuming the bearing came loose in the hub again.

Almost head-on'd a left turning truck two days ago. Gave all the front break I could while trying like hell to lift my foot up and find the brake pedal/heel rest. Linked brakes + floorboards = no fuckin way.

I think he's saying that floor boards make it harder to find the rear brake and also make it harder to modulate.

    I think he means:

Re: I present to you, SS LandWhale

Bingo. Just front gives not much for braking. Rear does plenty, but you have to lift your foot up off the floorboard about 5”, find the little “braking peg” with your heel, and then you’ll find the pedal with your toes. Or you’ll push like hell on the fucking cylinder that sits right in front of the pedal. For such a huge bike there is not a lot of foot room between the front brake pedal and the cylinder head so you end up pressing down on the cylinder head instead of the pedal sometimes by mistake. As it turns out, trying to brake using the cylinder head does not result in adequate braking.

Same thing happened with my dad's r100rt beemer. Head was kind of in the way.

The stopping power of the rear brake on my 84 after new fluid and pads was seriously impressive. I know it's a linked system but having that much stopping power come from a bike weighing so much was a really bizzare feeling the first time.

This is just me musing, but is it possible to retrofit for a traditional brake setup? New front master and some plumbing?

Easier solution is to go back to stock footpegs/pedal setup. Parts are on the way!
