How To : Steering Stem Droid Mount/ Ball Mount for GPS

    Hey guys,
So after seeing all the different style mounts out there, i got tired to looking and not seeing what i wanted. I wanted something that was smaller, looked oem, not huge and obnoxious.

    I made my own.

    The tools youll need:

    A MIG Welder
    Angle Grinder
    Drill w/metal bits
    small hack saw

    items used

I used a Motorola DROID RAZR Car dock i had for the ball
    small bolt
    .5in Bolt 4 inch length

i took the .5in bolt and cut the threaded part off...so i had the nice smooth part of the bolt. I ground down the end with my bench grinder and got it smooth and tapered.

Then i notched in the slots so i could put orings in there, so i could get my nice snug fit. little trial and error, but after 5 minutes i got it work.

After i got that situated, i used a center punch and marked the center most part on the head of the bolt...then i clamped it into a vise, and drilled a hole straight down into the bolt. same size drill bit as the small bolt.

Now after i did this, i took the Droid Car dock i had (For me razr) I used a hacksaw and cut the ball off, then grinded that area so it was smooth again.

Found the center point on the ball and center punch, and drilled it out... was very careful drilling the ball out...dont want it to get hot and melt, and dont want to drill through it.use the same size drill bit as the same size small bolt your using.
I Actually Drill and Tapped the ball so it threaded onto the small bolt.later on when i attached it to the small bolt, i use adhesive too.

Inserted the small bolt into the hole and make sure its good.

Now insert the small bolt into the hole you drilled onto the head of the big .5in bolt. make sure its the height you want etc.

Once its good, tack weld it, and finish it up. then grind it smooth if you want to make it look nice.

Then take the ball, fill the hole with a little epoxy and screw the ball onto small bolt.

    now your done!

i have ridden over 1500 miles with this, not one issue.
The cell phone is held in by the car dock. the car dock has a piece that actually charges the phone so the charging piece that goes into the phone helps secure it into the case. works great for me.

Here are a few pictures of what I've made.
this is on my 2012 Honda CBR 600RR

I can machine custom stuff like that faster and easier, should you ever want to try me. Here's the one I made to fit my Zumo 550 to my Triumph Tiger 800, nestled between the gauges and the windscreen:

Been thinking about making a mount for my iPhone or garmin... But would want something not obtrusive and easily removable.
Looked around online and everything either seems overly expensive or not practical on an f4i.

Maybe your idea of a homemade mount is the way to go....
    Good write up.

You gotta check out white horse gear. They have everything. I need to get a mount for a phone or gps and wire in a charger.

Twisted Throttle has one of the best selections of GPS mounts for all kinds of bikes. Give them a look too, or ping me for a custom made one. I work cheap.
