    strategy for contesting lidar?

Got a speeding ticket on my motorcycle this morning in Boston, 49 in a 30, a state policeman was sitting in his cruiser on the side of the road, as soon as I came over a hill and was in his sight he lit me up. The citation indicates my speed was estimated and measured with lidar, no distance was given. I was just about the only vehicle on the road. I wasn't asked to sign the citation, but using that fact to argue improper procedure, in front of magistrates and judges, has never gotten me anywhere. Why do I always see cops with lidar outside of their cars, while this statie was inside his car? And why didn't he indicate a distance on the citation? Isn't it standard procedure to do so? I've spoken with another state trooper in court before, and that one always brought his lidar training certificate with him when he went before a judge, so I assume this trooper will do the same. As for discovery, I've asked for documents from the state police on prior occasions and they always respond with a request for payment before they will dig up the information I want. Any thoughts about general strategy here? I really don't think there's much I can do, especially since the state police always seem to show up in court. I'm not even sure I want to bother showing up in front of a magistrate just to get the fine cut in half and be found responsible.

Oh yeah, one more thing. Due to a registry error, my registration and plate don't quite match, they are off by one character. The state trooper actually confiscated my registration, he wouldn't give it back!

Pay tens of thousands of dollars for a sex change, a nice outfit, make-up & some perfume... You'll get off scott free.

Just ask Patricia & Jaynnus, they did it. (well, not the sex change part) The three of us all got stopped on the way to the race track... I was the only one that had to pay 200 bucks plus insurance surcharge

    screw that.
    fight it.
If it was just ticket money it would be 1 thing, but a ticket in MA results in a surcharge on your insurance of a significant amount and it lasts for like 6 years or something. Ive got 2 tickets in the last 2 years and I pay a NICE surcharge on all my policies every year....MA is a big big bullshit state when it comes to this crap. Dress nice, act sorry and remorsefull and hope for the best.

Didn't know that... That does suck!

I have fought all my tickets hoping they will be reduced a lil. Plus it gives you time to save up the dough.

Man, where did that happen ?
Nice to know where they are setting up traps.
    Was it the JWay?

This morning I was going from Jamaica Plain through Dorchester and
almost lane split right past a Statie in a Charger !
Luckily I spotted him at the last second and stopped right in
his blind spot! I'm not even running my new registration sticker,
its in my drawer at home. yikes...

This was Centre St near Faulkner. I actually did split right past a statie on the Jway inbound at Brookline Ave a few weeks back. He was stuck in the far right lane so I figured no way would he come after me. Was I ever wrong! That b*stard went straight for the oncoming lanes and followed me all the way up to the light to pull me over, sirens blaring the whole way, at 5 mph. It was kind of embarrassing, but I only got a warning for that one.

whoa... hate to say it, but that looks bad dude...
a warning and ticket going 19 over, all in a matter of weeks ?
Those warnings go into a database.

Do the cops actually see warnings when they look up my license? I'm just starting to get sick of the bullsh*t in this city, especially when it comes to the state police. Those guys all suck. Bikes should really be given a lot more leniency, especially when it comes to filtering through traffic. Europeans know this, I wish people here could see it too.

You're dreamin' broseph. Lane splitting is legal only in CA and there aren't any signs of other states joining the bandwagon.

Not saying I disagree with your statement but there's plenty of money....errr, I mean "safety concerns".....with lane splitting and subsequent tickets.

Also, I'm not 100% on this, but I believe the warnings can be seen in the system for up to 30 days.

I got nabbed about 5 years ago, but they dug up my last citation that was back in 1989! From the cruiser! They can find out all about you before they get out of the vehicle. Go fight it anyway, you'll loose, and they will reduce the fine.
Lidar is a tuff one to beat. They AIM it at you, and and beam is a lot narrower than typical radar. You got nailed....

    Re: strategy for contesting lidar?

I would have to say, suck it up and pay the fine. If the possible reduction in the fine is less then the money lost by taking the time out of work and less then worth the hassle of going through all of that, then don't bother. Your best chance of getting out of the ticket is before it is even writen when you are first confronted by the police officer. Attitude is everything right then.
