I was actually kind of hawt on the Ducati Desert Sled...then I sat on it at the IMS a couple of weeks ago.
#1 your right heel literally sits on the exhaust...no way around it. Yes there is a shield, but your foot is still resting on it, that's just poor design. Bike should have had high pipes anyway.
#2 you cannot stand on the bike and grip the tank with your legs. It's impossible.
That bike could have been really cool, but it is not.
Indian will find a way to soften this prototype up for consumer sales. It’ll come with non adjustable usd forks, that single disc front, and who knows what other maladies.

The interwebs says they got that prototype down to <450 lbs. that sounds fun!
WTF happens between these prototypes and reality.
I have zero doubts the same will be true for the Yami FZ07 based Tenere, KTM 790 based ADV'er, and so on and so forth.
That said, maybe we shouldn't be so hard on underwhelming offerings like the Ducati scrambler, etc.
But then, maybe we should be.
I'm curious what the driving factor behind not producing these cool demo models for production is. I am assuming that it is price point. They likely think that if they build it as the demo sits the cost will be higher than their target audience will pay. How do they explain things like the top of the line Ducati models that sell out then? If they want to build a watered down version for the masses that makes some sense but at least build a run of the same as demo models for those willing to pay to get the same thing.

You're looking at the wrong audience. We're mostly the "sport bike" and "racer" crowd so everyone is a cheap prick. It could have M50 Monobloc's, semi-active Ohlins suspension, 10 levels of TCS and ABS, have the ability to carry 10 grocery bags, climb Mt Washington on the foot path, and win the track day in black group and people will still bitch if it costs $17k. The company who would build the FTR1200 has a customer base who would happily write a check for $30k for drum brakes and saddle bags just as long as it comes with a t-shirt.
That is the thing though, we aren't all the "sport bike" and "racer" crowd where everyone is a cheap prick. There are those that would pay the money for something like the FTR shown in the link you provided, even some of the $30k for drum brakes, saddle bags and a t-shirt crowd would be interested as they came from a flat track as a kid background. Nostalgia and cruising to the coffee shop to wow your buddies you've been meeting with since the old days can draw a lot of cash out of wallets as well as the guy that likes the tech and style of the concept bike.
I guess that is why marketing people get paid to make these decisions because apparently we don't understand fully the cost effectiveness of making the cool bikes.
There is some market for these things, apparently it just isn't big enough to justify to the bean counters though.
Functional bikes dont look that cool, generally.
A street tracker shouldn't be all that functional. It is the basic essence of two wheels. powerful, as light as possible, stripped back, and FUN. any other "functions" should be left on the cutting room floor.
I think it looks cool and would be super fun to ride for shorter rides. The exhaust routing in relation to your right leg was the only thing that jumped out at me as suspect, besides the upright position with no wind protection...After owning a bunch of naked bikes, and enjoying extended rides and adventures, its not that much fun to use your torso as a braking parachute for hours on end.
In other words, it looks awesome for its purpose, but it wouldnt be a good only bike for me, personally. But one look in my garage screams the conclusion that NO bike is a good only bike, if you like all kinds of riding
