    Re: V-strom build

I think the alternator is 1 wire with integral regulator but if your keeping the stator you should upgrade to the series R/R

Randy are you going to the peep show camp out... I may

The exhaust set up looks very good hope it works for you

when I get it back, I will take a sound video and post

That actually sounds really good! Little poppy, but good!

If you want it quieter, maybe get a large washer with a 1" ID, weld a little piece of 1" tubing to it, and then weld it inside the exhaust tip as a small reducer. Shouldn't loose any power, and it'll give you back a little back-pressure as well as cut the DB's.

I'm thinking it would look like this when done... only not as nice. Lol...

Coming home the sewing machine noise was ahead of the exhaust

I was serious about the snuff or not

I searchd for snuff or not on ebay, the one you picured is way more money than I want to spend, more than I paid for the exhaust and only 1¼-1½ size, my pipe is 1 3/4 I found a reasonable price snuff or not for 2¼-2½ size

has given my idea, may the combination of a short downturned tailpipe, exhaust wrap and lower idle will get me the 3 db that I need to be legal

    Re: V-strom build

I never have that much traffic on my street, all my neighbors came home from work at exactly the same time neighbor across street's kid was having a tantrum, tire noise from traffic is as loud as my exhaust , and crickets, locust and other wildlife in background is making quite a racket as well. I may redo the video in a little more quiet time to get better sampling of exhaust sound

sounds a lot better in video than in reality, it is easily as loud as aftermarket Harley, my urologist has told me my penis is shrinking, but not that much

    Re: V-strom build

getting ready for my next phase of my build

trying to decide what way to go regarding auxiliary battery

    my current thoughts are

    a.
multiple motocycle batteries in parallel take smallest space, do CCAs add up when you when you wire in parallel ?

    b.
Type 51 Optima Yellow top, size for a Honda Fit, 450cca, narrow enuf, but kinda tall for the space

    c.
other recomendations ? should I consider Lithium Ion ?

my goal is to have as many CCAs as I need to start in -50°f

    Re: V-strom build

Assuming thick wiring and a healthy starter solenoid batteries in parallel will have amperage added so more cold cranking

I think car batteries will work but am concerned about if they are drained they may use so much charging current it would strain the
    regular charging system

You might look into some marine / camper battery switches allowing you to take some off line or add them when needed. In an old mechanical world you could add batteries in series 24V to spin your starter. If dead cold this will spin it faster but MUST be isolated from modern electronics.

Lastly lithium Ion grenades perform WORST in cold temperatures requiring a warm up etc before cold cranking power is available,

The other concern is at some low voltage I think below 9V the electronic control system goes to sleep so won't start

Also recommend a small hole so a tube from a can of starting fluid can be inserted into the airbox when needed

    Re: V-strom build

Remember Rich, that I am also installing a belt driven 60 amp one wire alternator, the auxiliary electrical system will be completely independent of the stock wiring with the exception of a trigger wire for a relay, I don't even think I will add a jump start switch, I will just carry a short set of custom made jumper cables

    Re: V-strom build

Fords did have an independent starter solenoid you could add to the starter system

Or a battery switch and you could choose which system. I would think the 2 R/R might get confused with 2 generator sources

Perhaps stock run electric clothing and accessories and 60 amp the bike

Yes, I have been contemplating using a Ford starter relay as my primary power switch and possibly a second for a connection to the main bike wire harness in event of yet another oem charging system failure

    Re: V-strom build

Probably would of been cheaper to strap one of these on the back of the bike and just fire it up whenever the extra power is necessary.

Honda EU1000i Model Info | Super Quiet 1000 Watt Inverter Generator | Honda Generators

    Really.

Wire in a battery charger, DC converter, microwave, stage lighting, space heater, coolant/block heater etc.

You think I'm kidding, but if you make a mount to attach it to one of your two racks in the back, then you'd be able to run it all winter and take it off in the summer. Plus you'll be able to move it to your next bike that you buy.

hardly, and I am paying a local fabrication shop to machine parts and my dealer to install them, I expect total outlay to be about half the cost of that inverter
