that stupid shit they put over cracks...

I'm sure you all know that sealant shit they put over cracks on streets and parking lots. WTF! I almost have been down twice because of it, the second time being today. If your turning at all on them and its 85+ and sunny these things feel like patches of ice. I'm so use to keeping my head up and through the turn that I sometimes miss seeing these. Who else shares this scary experience of having to put a foot down to keep your bike up. They mentioned cold tires, new pavement, and other things in the MSF course, however they forgot to tell me about this.(end of rant)

Whew. When I saw the title and your handle I thought you might have dumped. Yeah, i know exactly what you're talking about. Remeber that ride to Sears? I told you what almost happened right after we stopped.

For those of you that weren't with us.

We were going thru a mild left hand turn about 25mph. It was a basic turn on a road that encloses the Northshore Mall parking lot. All of a sudden my bike (still slightly leaned over) started going straight, then caught again, and I got a little wobbly. If I had been on a real road going any faster than I was, then my bike would have been scratched on both sides.

^I'm with mike, be careful on old, repaired roads.

Oh and on a side note. It's 4:30 on Sunday and Eric Gagne let up the Sox lead again. Is he trying to make us lose?

try living in Foxboro. They seem to pave the roads with it. On the plus side if you hit the race track you wont be as scared when you slide a bit or the bike gets a little case of the wobbles.

I feel you pain on the tar snakes. Last year I was riding in the rain on the highway. I changed lanes, and just as I got into my lane, my rear tire hit one and my rear slid right out from under me. I was sure I was going down, but somehow it grabbed and I went on my way...with a giant dump in my pants! It had the makings for first a low and then a high side, but someone liked me that day I guess.

Its my experience that motorcyclists are not thought of very often when roads are repaired, or worse in construction zones. In Amherst, they were doing construction that left 2 foot long sections of dirt accross the width of the street, with no signs. After several cars drive over it it became rutted and you know the story from there.

    haha, sucks man.

jim and mike -- last night i blasted a fist-sized rock on some twisty road in lynnfield at like 50mph midway through a sweeping left-hander. lost the rear a bit and got some vicious headshake, but somehow managed to keep from what surely would've been quite the spectacular failure.

thought it popped a tire, cuz the road i pulled onto after the incident was that sort of undulating pavement with sunken sections -- got that blown-tire-squishing-and-rolling-off-the-rim feeling...

oh, and jim, what was that super twisty road we went down w/ mike that one night? it was right off of rte 1, but was kinda in the middle of nowhere, lead out towards rte 97... i'm hoping to hit it sometime when it's light out (maybe next weekend), and get a better feeling for it, now that my bike is like 95% broken in...

By the way, I actually hit one of those tar snakes today leaving that resorvior road, but my tire caught like a second later thanks to my abnormally large chicken strips....

What's worse is when they sprinkle that black sandy shit over it and then they put too much on it.

So, not only do you have the black ice, but you have sand all over the road.

Don't tense up and you'll be fine. The tire will move a half inch and that's it. Let it do what it wants and relax.

Tar snakes suck, but usually it's not hard to avoid them or minimize your contact with them. If the road is crisscrossed with lots of them then just ride more carefully.

    +1

the alternative is a crack in the road that will grow big enuf to swallow your tire before they repave the road

yesterday I was going through a right hander and didn't want to change my line because the tar snakes were length wise, not straight across the road...as a result my mirror was inches from the guardrail.

I hate them damn things, I've even had the cage slip on them.

just be really cautios as markbvt said. try to hit 'em at 90 degree angles if ya can.

Depending on the rider that 1/2 inch can feel like a mile. When youre used to the tires sliding a bit then its not a big deal but Id be willing to bet most people dont ride to the point where their tires slide a little.

I've ridden over tar snakes at high speeds in turns in very high heat, and the most I've noticed is that the rear wants to skip out a few inches then corrects itself. It makes you shit yourself a little, but you get used to it.

Also, I don't know how different tires will take it. I run PPs.

Go look again... Unit IV, Section G "Special Situations" is on page 39 of your MSF workbook:

"Crack sealant and tar strips: These can be very slippery, especially in hot weather. Be sure to recognize them early and adjust lane position to avoid problems."

    Have a nice day!

This stuff is a rubber based product, it acts almost the same waya tire does in cold weather it becomes slick. In the heat it begins to melt and becomes even more slick due to the oils in the product.

I lay this shit down for a living.

The only thing better than almost losing it on this crap, is breathing it in at 550 degrees along with the extreme amount of burning propane!

they did that in my work parking lot in merrimack nh and I almost dumped my bike on a couple of occasions, definitely a few tense momments. Although I think it feels more like warm marshmellow
