This sucks I got a nail in brand new tire.

Man does this suck. Picked up a nail somewhere in a brand new tire. Went by the dealer to see about getting it fixed and he said he could patch it from the inside but would not recommend use > 75mph. I was thinking they could plug this. It`s only a small finish type nail with a small leak to match. Anyone got any advice on this?I run slab most of the time and don`t need tire problems at speed so I ordered another tire already I but wonder if this is just a load of crap to sell tires or someone trying to do the right thing for me.

A patch installed from the inside is more than acceptable.
These style do not let go and I would think the size of the nail has not done any damage to the tire's ability to do it's intended job.

If you have any doubts, I suggest a new tire.
I have had 3 tires over the years patched from the inside with no issues.

To be honest with you. Riverside Kawasaki used to plug them (same as a car tire). I started doing this a long time ago myself after learning this when I get nails and have NEVER had a problem. I know a lot of people speak against this, but seriously I have ridden entire seasons with plugs and never experienced anything. And the fact that a local motorcycle dealership was fixing them this way, to me, means it really cannot be that bad.

Mike has patches that are on theinside, and stick through the hole to seal it. He also adds something to vulcanize it.

Thanks everyone for the posts. I think I`m gonna get the tire fixed with Mike and save it for a spare. Interestingly most everyone suggested I plug/patch it and I`m gonna PM mike about getting it done . Thanks again.

new tires have magnetism for nails that must be carefully worn away

thousands of miles on the common string type radial tire plug that is inserted from the outside, never a problem

That seems to be the choice. Will doing burn outs speed up the "carefully worn away" process? LOL

everyone seems to say plug it & ride it. personally, i'd rather spend the $150 on a new tire. you're only on 2 wheels & that wouldnt settle with me doing highway speeds with 50% of my tires plugged/patched. i got a nail in my tire and replaced it.

Having experienced a rear tire instantly going flat and being able to ride it to a stop, I have no issues whatsoever in plugging and riding a rear tire.

A front however, is a different story.

Just look at it this way, if the plug did ever let go, the air will not instantly leave the tire like it would it you, say, dented a rim so bad it released the bead.

You would notice handling issues long before it became unsafe to ride on it.

    I'm curious,

what happens when you get a flat tire at speed with a virgin unplugged tire ?

Go buy the same exact tire from CycleGear's website with the road hazard protection and then bring them back the other tire.

You could put a patch on it then add a tube. If that isn't enough you could fill it with sand.

not sure i understand the question. what do i do with a flat tire that hasnt been plugged before?

it happened last season, met up someone on NESR to go riding, and ran over a screw in the parking lot at the meeting spot. trailed the bike home, and replaced the tire before riding again.

no problems with a plugged rear here(no homo). Bike still wheelies ok too lol. Only plugged it cuz the bike had less than 2k miles on it and didnt want to see a good tire go to waste. I just picked up another nail and now i got a slow leak so I got m3's in the mail. Lesson learned, I'll never pull over on the shoulder or ride in the grass ever again.

Re: This sucks I got a nail in brand new tire.

I had a patch installed (from the inside of the tire) early last year. For a few months it seemed fine; I was always good about watching tire pressures -- this was my rear tire. In September of last year, when doing 75mph down I-295, I got a sudden and rapid loss of pressure in my rear tire. It didn't "blow out", but it did get very flat very quickly. I managed to limp the bike off the road, but I had to change my undies when I got home.

I am one of the cheapest fuckers you'll ever meet, but after that experience the idea of plugging another motorcycle tire gives me the willies.
