    Suggestions... bike emergency

So a guy that works in my building had the steering lock broken and wiring harness slashed on his R1 right at the ignition while parked near the building here in Boston. He's got a friend comin w/ a pick-up & ramps and I had some tie-downs in my car to lend him but doesn't know where to bring it to get repaired.

Just lookin for suggestions on a course of action.

For tonight - get it in a locked garage or someplace secure. Take a look at it in the daylight (give the friend with the truck a six pack to buy his time) and start calling around. A Yamaha shop makes the best sense and make sure to check with insurance. Hope this helps.

I can repair the harness and replace the lock if he doesn't wanna pay a dealership to do it.

If all the parts are in-hand it'll be less than a week turnaround.

Snapping the steering lock damages the frame. Likely the bike is totalled.

1 - call cops file police report, like hesso said, the bike is probably totalled. It needs a new frame and wiring harness. Unless the tab is on the lower triple and not the frame.

2 - fix the ignition(solder) and forget about the steering lock. They useless anyways, but that being gone isnt going to helo the resale vales.

3 - fix the ignition and frame. Peter can, or knows someone who can weld the tab back on the frame. Then it will need to be powder coated.

4 - scour ebay for frame w/title and harness

On an R1, there is a tab on the front of the frame that serves as a mounting point for the steering lock.

My R1 had this problem, somehow the tab broke off and got caught between the frame and the lower triple. It made a nasty groove in the front of the frame. Once I removed it everything worked fine, but I had not steering lock. It wasn't an issue here in Vermont, but I think in Boston, aka Bike Thief City, its a bit of a requirement.

Not really, they just get a bunch of guys to lift it . . .

. . . into the back of a truck, so unless you literally lock it to something, a steering lock won't help at all.

+1 stem locks keep honest people honest....same thing with the disc lock....

the safest way to secure a bike is with a chain lock to something secure and a cover...preferable locking cover...

the only way to really protect yourself is theft coverage...

Yeah, a steering lock isnt going to stop anybody
that wants your bike, that includes in Boston or not.
All you need is a skateboard under the front wheel!

Even the most heavy duty krypotnite chain
can be cut in 3 minutes with power tools according some
    independant review I read recently.
Anything you do just slows them down.
    Rather depressing isnt it?

I wasn't picking on Boston, it just seems like a couple people on this site get a bike stolen from there every year.

If I lived down there, I'd find a bike ugly enough that no one wanted it. You know, like a Suzuki DRZ400SM.

If I ever lived near there I would have two hand guns and a bike alarm with remote alert. Like I do.

Getting a CCW in the city is tough. And sometimes a shitty bike doesn't matter. My 97TLS was right next to a brand new M50 when it was stolen. Any sportbike's a target.
