When you SM guys did the conversion, was being able to swap wheels without the hassle of swapping chains part of the consideration? I want to strike that balance of being able to ride the street and dirt with the same chain, without wringing the piss out of it on the street nor losing the lowend grunt in the dirt. XR650R with stock 14/48 gearing.

I have a separate chain for the DRZ, because the sprocket I have for the dirt is much larger for more grunt.
I use the same chain on my KTM with both dirt wheels and Motard wheels. The rear sprocket for the dirt is 3 teeth bigger than the Motard, the front stays the same. For me, there has been enough adjustment to run it like that. I think the final gearing balances out to be the same because of the different size tires and rims, my 525 does 100mph on both dirt and street..give or take a mph or 2.
The MX bikes are a different ball game though and will require to sets of sprockets (at least a rear) and a extra chain.
I think you'll be fine with the XR, it is a 6spd??
It's also worth it to spend a little extra to make the swap as simple as possible. You don't want to be unbolting brake discs and sprockets every time you change the wheels over...also don't want to be bleeding brakes everytime.
I can do a complete swap on my KTM 525 is less than 20 minutes but I pretty much have 2 of everything..except the chain![]()

I have 3 chains actually. 1 for motard trim, 1 for dirt, 1 for ice. When going from dirt to motard on a true "dirt" bike your rear sprocket will be anywhere from 8 to 12 teeth smaller and you will need to swap chains. it'll only take you a minute to do a chain maybe 2 if you twang the frikin clip off into oblivion in the garage when you hammer it on.
You should buy another stock rear brake disc and leave it on your motard wheels. Same for the front. You'll be able to run the stock rotor and caliper if you are just doing round town rips and stuff. If you're hitting the track then go for the 320mm rotor and caliper relocator bracket. The most time consuming part is putting the sintered pads in the caliper and installing the relocator bracket.
All said and done I can do it in about 30 minutes. Where R7 save time is he has a complete front brake system with the cable and shit all attached. Switcharoo and you're done.
Good luck. What do you have for a dirt toy?

Yup, I bought an extra master, brake line, speedo unit, and speedo cable. It's all one unit the way it's set up and comes off in one shotOriginally posted by rmbbikes

I dont have to change any of that crap, I use the same caliper and rotor for both dirt and 'tard. Worked great at Loudon, and works well in the dirt.Originally posted by R7

My intended setup will be to run some sort of compromise gearing for the SM wheels close to a stock rear rotor. I am getting a 320mm EBC kit that comes with a caliper spacer to retain the same caliper. Wheel swaps will be a snap when I finally nail the gearing I am going to use. I am planning on swapping the stock sprocket over to the SM wheels and see how I like it. Highway runs will intentionally be kept at a minimum. The XR is a 5 speed. Stock dirt setup runs 100-105 @ 8400 rev limit. By dropping to a 17" wheel from an 18" and giving a little height due to knobby, I anticipate a 1-2" decrease in size. If I'm hitting the limiter @ 85-90, that is fine for me. I just want to retain the serious lowend grunt that the XR enjoys in the dirt and not wring it's neck on the road.

If your stock dirt setup does 100+ mph and you like that power range in the dirt, I'm sure the exact same gearing will be fine on the street![]()
So are you saying you will have this ready for spring? A street plated dirtbike is a huge plus, then you can come and enjoy a 33,000 acre playground with us sometime![]()

It's a lot less money to replace a stock MX/Enduro sized rotor than it is the Motard rotor, plus the Motard calliper hits the wheel spokes on the dirty wheels.Originally posted by highsider

I also change the speedo so I can keep an accurate track of hours/miles for service mostly, and also of the miles traveled for our Maine trips...which this year will require at LEAST a 100 mile fuel range![]()

I know i've been saying it over and over but YES this bitch will be completed well before spring. I have the Baja Designs kit on and it's working like a charm. Just need to wire a brake switch to the MC for inspection. One Mr. Stonner has hold of some documents that will allow it to be titled in NH and then sent back to me, the "new" owner. I ordered the black Excels in 3.5" and 4.25" with gold talons. and EBC 320mm kit from East Coast Wheels. This bike will be ready to rock before spring. The tank capacity is pretty good, but I have been kicking around the idea of grabbing a 3.6 or 4.2 gallon IMS clear tank to bump up capacity and range. I'm SO anxious to have this thing on the road. Probably going to run Pilot Powers in 120/70 and either 150/60 or 160/60. The bike will be very similar to thisOriginally posted by R7

It was looking good until the east Coast Wheels part.... at least you have the winter to get your parts. I've bought from them twice and have had to bad experiances with themOriginally posted by Rye

A 150 is the proper tire size for the 4.25" rim. You'll be surprised at just how good the Pilot Powers are in offroad conditions, I know I was impressed, especially in the wet rocks.
Even if you get it plated before the motard stuff, let me know.
Yamaha
Will do. I have read a few debates about 150 vs. 160...but just like I have never been a big proponent of putting a 190 on a 5.5", I'll probably run the 150.

I'm currently going thru this as well. I've got a set of motard wheels on the way (5.25 rear).
Going with..
Motard wheels
Extra rear disc
Big front rotor
relocation bracket
master / caliper / line
chain
word.

Yeah boyeeeeee nice to see some other tards. It's a blast ripping around town. People look at you a little wierd when you hop up on the sidewalk and down some stairs.

I'd love to Motard the KLX but I can't seem to find the parts or anyone else that had done it.
Anyone got any hook ups for this bike? Will KLR parts fit?
This would be nice.![]()

I've heard horror stories with running a rim that size, are you sure it's going to fit? My KTM has a 5" rear with a 160 tire and I had to shave the edge of the tire with a block plain so it didn't rub the swingarmOriginally posted by a13x
