    sv... 520 conversion and gearing

    so, im looking to do the 520 thing on my racebike, since i noticed a few stiff links while taking the old chain off to do my countershaft seal.

    two questions:

    -stick with the stock 15/45 for loudon? i hear this is the general consensus, but ive found all the conversion "kits", which are the cheapest option, are 14/45. maybe ill buy the kit and then a 15t front seperate and have two gearing choices to play with? if i got 14/45 where am i going to notice a problem as far as shift points as i get quicker?

    -wheres the cheapest place to get set up with sprockets/decent quality chain?

    i run 22's at loudon currently, and getting faster if that helps as far as gearing choices. just switched to gp shift so hopefully that cuts a little time.

    I have a 520 and went from 15/48 to 15/44. Haven't gotten a chance to ride it yet but hopefully I won't be needing to grab shifts in weird spots. Allegedly, 15/45 to 15/43 are good/common set-ups for an SV at Loudon. I don't remember where I got my conversion but it wasn't a kit. I bought the components separately (from indy superbike, possibly)

    i was advised for loudon 15/46 for newer riders. once you get faster to goto 15/44

    Pretty much... though I'm running 15/45.
    Don't think I'll need to go to a 44 unless I switch to running a superbike.

    Or, you could do what I did and do 15/46 to see how you like it. When you set the chain up, set it up fo that the wheel is further forward and closest to the the last wear marker.

    Then, get yourself another sprocket carried off eBay (I got mine for $40, shipped) and get a 45 tooth sprocket to mount on the extra carrier.

    This way, you can change to the 45 on the fly. 15/45 is better for NJMP anyway, if you ever intend on running there.

    You're a light guy, so 15/44 might work for you. This what I was originally running and had to downshift too much in T3 and T12.

    I run 15/46 now and it's been working out extremely well.

    If you're going to with a steel rear sprocket, go with Superlite. They're much lighter than the Sprocket Specialists sprockets. (isn't lighter why you're going with a 520 conversion anyway?)

    Don't bother buying the 520 kit with 14/45 (3.214:1) sprockets. Loudon is the tightest track you will most likely ever ride on and either 15/45 (3.0:1) or 15/44 (2.933:1) will be your final gearing choice. If you are a newbie, then 15/46 (3.067:1) might be a stepping stone, but my suggestion is to try 15/45 and buy another 44 tooth rear sprocket, when you feel you are hitting the rev-limiter driving through Turn 10. Back when I had my SV680 Superbike, I ran 16/46 (2.875:1) in the dry and 16/47 (2.94:1) in the wet.

    Last race weekend I believe Rick Doucette was running 15/43 (2.867:1) on his Superbike and turned 14's. I'm still running 15/44 on my 1st Gen SV650 Instructor bike and the SV has so much torque that it will probably also be fine at NJMP. 15/45 or 15/44 will be your best bet.

    FWIW, here are the top speeds in 5th & 6th gear for 1st Gen SV650 gearing:

    5th MaxPwr & 6th MaxPwr = 9,400 RPM / 5th MaxSpd & 6th MaxSpd = 10,500 RPM

    I'm wondering if 1st gen "optimum gearing" is ever so slightly different than 2nd gen "optimum gearing". (lwss to lwss, lwsb to lwsb)

    With 15/46:
    I was running 18's and not hitting the limiter all that much.
    At 17's I was touching the limiter fairly regularly before 1, 3, 6, 9 and 11.
    I did one 16.5 with that gearing. Was bouncing off the limiter before 1, 3, 6, 9 and 11.

    With 15/45:
    This year I'm back into mid-high 16's and not hitting the limiter all that much. I might bump into it before 1, 3, 6, 9 and 11 but only barely. Not bouncing.

    SS legal 2nd gen.

    There must be some sort of difference between the gens. I am running 15/46 and was hitting the limiter running flat 19s in 1,3,6,9, and 11. I am waiting on my 44 rear to come in and I will give that a shot and see how she does in superbike.

    i run 14/44
    i just bought a 520 quick accel kit from RK for amandas track bike and that came with 14/45.
    funny thing is that the description said it was +1 in the back, but doesnt mention the -1 in the front. it might be too low.
