Whose got an SV and let me see 'em

I have an 03 naked, with the following mods:

Front fork tuned (springs, emulator, oil)
    Penske 8981 shock
    Goodridge front hoses
    Vesrah RJL pads
    Pilot powers
    SM Type II bars

Other than that I did the Suzuki FE kit, an Art slip-on, and it also came with a gel seat. Oh and of course frame sliders.

The bike is so much fun to ride, but that is on a very limited base of information since I really have never ridden anything else!

I have 2 friends who just picked up SVs, a 2000 for $1000 (bent forks, needed tires and carb cleaning) and a 99 SVS for $1600 which only needed directionals due to a mild drop. Oh and removal of a gay superman "S" sticker is also needed on that one!

Truth be told, the $1000 SV is a hell of a bike (it had 1000 miles on it, it just sat for a few yrs) and I would love to find one of them, I think they are out there if you look hard enough and are a really good negotiator. There's a good amount of used inventory out there, hard core SV riders tend to demand a high if not overly high price for their bikes when selling IMHO.

I think that doing the suspension and the brakes on the bike, particuarly the suspension was the most useful modification to the bike. It handles very well and it made a real difference in the rideability of the bike under harder conditions, like on the track.

One view is that you can get the bike cheaper than a 600 superbike, throw some suspension, tires and brakes on it, and you'll come out cheaper, on a different bike with more character. the other view is that you throw $ into a bike that ultimately has inferior performance. If performance is not the only dimension you are into, and you enjoy a nice V-twin, I'd consider it. It's a very rideable bike you can enjoy going 20 or 120, and you can enjoy it riding it at 2/10ths or 10/10ths (so they tell me!)

I agree, I pretty much got my bike to where I want it.

Now I start riding. The suspension was the best money I put into it. Totally changed the character of the bike.

I have only done the suspension mods on a budget.

    I.e:

.90 front springs with 20wt oil, and the zx6r rear shock.

those alone made the bike much much more complient at higher speeds.

You forgot to mention the low speed ball busting front brake stop!
I could not believed how much it dived when tried to stop in traffic.

Totally changed my priority on mods, glad I got good suspenders on now ... great bike!

For those who have done the rear shocks, how much sag do you have dialed into the bike now? My bike is much higher, any higher might be tip toe material and I am over 6'1".

According to the suspension experts, 10mm free sag and 30mm total sag.

Dunno what Peter Kates recommends but I got that info from
Max McAllister of Traxxion Dynamics, Jim Lindemann of LE-Suspension.

Free Sag = sag under the bikes own weight.
Total Sag = Rider plus Free sag.

If you get a discrepency between free and total, it is an indicator that the spring rate is usually not correct for you.

For example, you get 10mm Free sag and 40mm of total sag,
then the spring needs to be stiffer.

Sag is set by using preload to compress the spring till you get your numbers.

Note: I am not an expert, I am just learning this fascinating area by purchasing a couple of books, Traxxion DVD which breaks it down to dead simple and internet articles. So if you disagree, please do so constructively. That way I can unlearn any BS.
Also most of my info is specific to the SV650.

Is yours off a little bit as well? I got a new one from Oneida and there's an extra bit of overhang near the front seat that I'm not happy about.

Also, here's an old shot from last summer after I bought it:

And a few months ago, after the new undertail and new holeshot exhaust:

I'm going home tomorrow to fix a small undertail issue, get a new rear shock on and finetune my suspension. Maybe I'll take some photos as well.

What is the final paint color? You painting the white bodywork up to match the yellow or are you redoing the whole thing in a new color?

The SV is a great bike, I owned a 2001 that I put about 20k miles on and loved it, around town at track day or cross country, it worked great for me. I also have owned a DL650 vstrom with the SVbased motor and that was a great bike too. You can't kill the little guys.

As for performance? I have seen many a stock SV riden well embarass bikes with better performance numbers on tight roads or at track days. Granted the SV will be smoked when things open up.

Now if Suzuki would just give us an SV650R we'de all be happy. Should come right from the factory with sporting tires, a GSXR front end,a tasty rear shock, and steering dampner. Think how much cheaper the factory could do this than every guy on the street. And it would still be less $$$ than the 600 class.

    SVS list= $6449
    GSXR list = $ 8799

by the time you add rest of farings
    better fork
    better rear shock
    steering damper (not dampner)

it would likely be the same price or close to it, people would just buy gsxrs instead, and people would still want to upgrade components, the only reason gsxr suspension bits are as readily available is cause stock gsxr's get upgraded

it would not be cost effective to have different suspension bits on different versions of the SV, and the SV's purpose in the market is to be a basic budget bike

And the stock tires are plenty sporting for 99% of all street riding.

Agreed it might not make sense to us $ wise, but I think it would sell and appeal to alot of riders, seems like every other guy that buys an SV spends another $2K upgrading it within the 1st year. I personally ran mine stock (with D220 Ben) and like I said, loved it. Suzuki could bolt on existing parts (forks, shock, damper, and tires) for under $1000.

It will be interesting to see the next Gen. of SV now that all 4 japanese manufacturers are in the budget niche (probably spelled that wrong too) along with the Koreans. I think you will see some upgrades, probably not to the extent I mentioned above, but something significant.

Not that anyone listens to me but in 2000 I told my buddies that Suzuki would build an adv-tourer using the SV motor, they thought I was smoking pot. Then in 2002 here comes the DL1000, followed in 2004 by DL650. If Suzuki sticks to their 4 year devolopment cycle for the SV650 we should see something new for 2007 at shows this fall.

Anytime it gets below 50 degrees, those stock dunlops really suck!

I do agree when it is 80 and above, the tire seems to handle 99% of what is thrown to it. My bitch with these tires is that they give no warning ...

I now got two sets of tires for my bike mounted on different rims.

    Pilot Roads for commuting
Pilot Powers for screwing around and going to the Dragon.

The way that I am set up, it will take me a half hour to 45 minutes to do a complete tire swap. Majority of that is taking the tools out and putting them away.

I agree 100%. I'd consider throwing on some lightweight/trick wheels, lap timer, and factory rear cowl cover. Maybe a stiffer rear swingarm?

That setup with the 996 motor out of big brother 1k would be really hot...in nakie trim of course. It would be like Suzuki's answer to S2R
