    Swapping tanks for trackdays?

Looking at some sets of new/used <ideally cheap> plastics to use on the R6 for track days (everything from scratched street plastics, to high quality race plastics, to cheap chinese crap). Some of the options would come with a tank. Thought it might be nice to have an extra tank to throw on for TD's but wondering how much of a pain in the ass this would be to swap in and out a half dozen times or so during the season... Tank does not come with a fuel pump, but it looks like I could pick one up for about $65? Pros/cons?

One other question is that some of the kits say: "IMPORTANT: AS THIS IS A RACE SET, YOU NEED TO HAVE A RACING EXHAUST SYSTEM TO MAKE THE BELLY PANEL FIT CORRECTLY."

    Here is one example...
    http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/YAMAH...Q5fAccessories

What exactly are they referring to? I have a high mount Leo Vince slip on.... but it doesn't seem from looking at the pics that the headers would be in the way.....

Its typically the catlytic converter that doesn't fit with race plastics. If you only have a slip-on then you will not be able to fit the race plastics.

Tank takes some time so thats a matter of if you have the time to do it.

Might as well build a race bike.

Maybe we need a new Lauren forum.

to spite what they said, the picture that they have with the plastics mounted on the R6 has a full stock exhaust...

I don't think her bike has a cat. I had to trim my bellypan to make it fit with the aftermarket system.

That pit-eck stuff is pretty low quality and will take some time to fit properly. If you do get it you might want to reinforce the mounting points once you figure out where exactly they will be. I have crap hotbodies that's been crashed a few times and repaired crappily but they look decent enough for me so I'd say go for it if you want them.

If the tank is beat up and you want to do the work go for it! If it is the same quality of the one you already have, just buy it if/when you need it. That's just what I would do, I actually don't know anything at all. And there are no sexual jokes in here yet so I don't even know why I read it...

    I know I know, could've bought a track bike...
But honestly, I have lots of questions the more I learn and want to gather as much info as possible. Sorry.... Should I just stick to posting off topic BS rather than actual bike questions? Never mind, don't answer that, inevitably someone will start talking about bewbies.

You guys should be flattered that I trust and respect the opinions and wealth of information NESR has to offer. Just started with the bikes last June, and its been a whirlwind crash course in self education.

And no.... my bike does not have a catalytic converter....

To be honest, I learned more while messing with my track bike than I have with my street bikes.

Probably because I don't care what the track bike looks like.

You're just as anxious to learn as some of us are or were. We're just having fun at your expense.

You're right that at least this isn't some stupid boob, ass, package, YouTube, Keith thread.

Ask away lauren, it least it keeps us talking about bikes.

If you want to swap the tanks have at it. if you do go down you will be glad you did. Buy a second fuel pump it would suck moving that each time.

    Re: Swapping tanks for trackdays?

Lauren, you do realize you're setting yourself up for an hour's worth of work just to get the bike skinned for a trackday.

Then, at the end of your trackday, add another hour to put it back to street trim, nevermind the fact that you risk damaging your OEM stuff everytime you are hanging or removing it. Just seems like alot of extra work, IMO.

My advice is don't push your limits where crashing becomes an issue and if you decide to push those limits then consider a dedicated track mule instead.

    Re: Swapping tanks for trackdays?

I do this with my Aprilia. Which I would say is the easiest bike I've owned to break down for a TD. I bought a lightly used tank and sharkskinz, thinking that I'd swap the tanks back and forth...I ended up running my "track tank" all summer! And its not that hard to change, but if you forget to run the tank dry on the last session, it gets to be a bitch draining the fuel. My Sharkskinz are a breeze to put on, but, even as a used set, I still had to drill to make things line up better.
You can do it, but after the 3rd time doing the seap you're 1) Gonna leave it set-up for TD's and get another street bike or 2) Buy/build another R6 for the track. You're going balls deep on this shit and its awesome! Keep on keeping on, and you'll be racing soon enough!!!

I love the tank cover for the Honda's such a great idea...

I ended up buying a set of used/ lightly rashed OEM plastics myself over the winter. I had a tail already and I spent around $230 for everything so far, I haven't got a front upper but I already setup something to get one. I do have to do some plastic welding and It's going to look like a getto junk yard car but I could care less.

I'd say you would spend less or about the same on a set of full race plastics and it's much less of a hassle than buying it one peice at a time and spending nights of trolling eBay.

I'm going to have to agree with the others and from personal experience. It becomes a major major chore to swap parts before a track day. Sell everyhk g you nought and buy a track bike for 2k. No joke if you plan on doing 4 or more track day a year.

Lauren, do what you want to do! Its your bike.

I swap plastics etc on my bike back and forth between trackdays and have never had an issue with it. Takes about 45 mins (without snacks...there alex you happy you bitch) and really isn't as huge of a burden as everyone makes it seem to be.

    Re: Swapping tanks for trackdays?

Lauren, I wouldnt bother with the tank unless you can get an extra fuel pump too. Those things are a PITA to change with all the gas sloshing around and such. A tank is about the last thing Id bother getting. If one pops up, fine, so be it, but I wouldnt go hunting for it.
