Taking bets......can I make it 5 miles to get my bike inspected!?

Well, finally took another few big steps to getting on the road today. Went and set myself up with insurance (liability, and bought $8000 worth of medical coverage), annual cost is $350. A-ok with me. Then headed off to the registry, got my plate, got my registration, and sending me my new MA vehicle title in a few weeks. THEN went over to the local powersports place and bought myself a Shoei TZ-R helmet in the variety of red Halex, and now my last big hurdle for now......

I have to actually ride the motorcycle 5 miles down the road to get it inspected. Nothing above 45mph zones for a mile or two, and one intersection, but I dunno. I'm debating on loading it and driving it there, or actually riding and just saving myself the hassle. Now keep in mind my experience is up to 4k in 1st gear in a self storage lot going straight up and down the rows.

I think I'll attempt it, theres a backway there that adds about a mile, but nothing gets above 35mph zones going that way, and theres alot less traffic. So for time being I have a big set of work boots, a pair of jeans, a heavy ass Gap leather jacket, and a shiny new helmet. Now I just need the balls to ride it.

    Ok...I'll take that bet.

You can make it. Just take it slow.

Do you have anyone around there that can go with you just for company, confidence and moral support? If I was closer, I would go with you.

    Good luck!!

Yeah, I know a few people I've talked to from the boards that are local, I may try and employ their supervision for my first trek out.

Oh dont worry, even in a car I have no reservation against pulling over and waving the tailgating asshole behind me on. If I need to, I'll go 20mph like a moped on the side of the road, but chances are I'll be fine.

If you are new to riding, I would avoid making your 1st ride to get it inspected. That is one other thing in the back of your mind plus trying to get used to the machine.

Have you taken the MSF course or do you have any riding experience? If you haven't taken the MSF and haven't been riding, I'd avoid riding the bike at all until taking it. If you have riding experience, I'd sign up for the MSF ASAP.

If you are not sure about the 5 mile ride maybe a good start is in a parking lot to work on starting, stopping, turning, etc. then venturing off into lightly travelled roads.

    Good luck!

PS: If you can, I'd read "Proficient Motorcycling" by David Hough, ideally before taking the MSF. The MSF teaches you 'what' you need to do, the book clearly details both the 'what' and the 'why'. I am convinced that applying the principles within this book will drastically reduce your risks of an accident, and de-mystify so much of the 'art' of riding a motorcycle. If you need a copy I might be persuaded to lend mine for a few weeks or so

I'm signed up for the MSF in 2 weeks from now. I wouldnt really care about getting it inspected, but I forgot here in MA when you register a vehicle you need to get it inspected within a week. What happens if I dont get it inspected? My registration is no good? Or I just lose my "just got registered, havent gotten inspected yet" grace period and would be at worst driving an uninspected vehicle?

Oreo, I'd take you up on the offer, but I have work starting at 7am every day, unless they do inspections on the weekend, then it might be an option, but otherwise I'll have to be riding down in the afternoon probably Monday or Tuesday.

And yes, I'm the one that tipped the bike in the storage area when all of a sudden a box truck jumped up in front of me in the row I was going down.

No inspection = moving violation & surcharge, so do at your own risk.

Good luck with the MSF, I'd probably chill out on the street riding until you get through the class. If you really can't wait, I'd hook up with that book and a deserted/unsanded parking lot. I'd avoid streets until taking the class.

You should probably wait until after the MSF to ride it on the street. You really do learn a lot in that course. Plus it would totally suck if by chance some asspole flew out in front of you and you froze up and ended up crashing the bike. To be safe, either have someone go with you, or just trailer it over there.

I'll ride over there with you to make sure you make it safely.

Meh, getting pulled over and ticketed and having surchargeable points put towards my license would be more of a cost to me in the long run than wrecking my bike would be. Come hell or high water, I'm going to try it! I wont be the first one to take the bike out w/o taking the MSF, nor will I be the last. Down, inspected, and then back to the stable. Unless for some reason I feel sassy and confident enough to go find a big parking lot and practice my wheelies and stoppies. lol kidding.

You have seven BUSINESS days not one week to get the inspection. Take it for a local ride and get comfy with it. Then after a couple of days go for the inspection.....

Just try and stay loose on the bike and remember "you are in control " if you dont feel right then pull in the clutch and stop the bike.Parking lots are your friend,if you can, bring some cones and set your self up some obstacles as you progress "get more comfortable"................That msf course will help you on your way..Be safe , good luck

Or wait to get your sticker after the MSF course, worse case scenario you get the ticket. Most likely if you tell the cop you waited to ride untill you took the MSF course and can prove it with your certificate on your person. Im sure there is little problem to be had.

It won't matter if you wait til after the MSF.

I would take a ride with you, but i currently out of a bike for a few.

If you do want to go before your MSF just relax and take it easy.

    Good Luck

Psssh.... like any cop is gonna check for inspection if you get pulled over. I got pulled over twice, with zero inspection sticker, and they didn't say a word about it.

I have YET to get a motorcycle inspected. I'm Billy Badass, goddammit.

Yea I have had my bike since last summer and I never got it inspected. Not because I am a bad ass but because I am a cheap bastard lol. I have to get it done soon though because I figure it is about time I went for my liscence and I don't think showing up with a uninspected vehicle will look so good. Good luck!

And if you get into a wreck, you won't be the first to do that! Seriously, Jeff, be careful out there. I'm self-taught, as well, but I would have been a lot better off had I taken the class.

No, it was for making it without dying. I got out of work about 1:30pm today, and figured that was early enough to make it there and back with plenty of time to spare, so once I knew I was done with work, I was starting to get myself pretty psyched up. This happened even before when I was goign to ride it around in a parking lot, and knew I would calm down once I was on the bike, which I did and am thankful for. Stalled it once, but otherwise had 0 "oh shits" or other worries.

On the way there I had my brother follow me in his car, so I didnt have to worry about my back and being tailgated or something stupid, just concentrated on my sides and what was ahead of me. Moving the bike around is so much easier once you have it moving, as opposed to rolling at 5mph.

Battery died while he was inspecting it Had to buy a new one. He was going to fail me for my rear right directional not working, but I figured out once I pulled the seat off that one of the previous owners ghetto duct taped the wires together going to the directionals, so I hit the wires a few times and got them blinking. He said "well, I saw them work, I'll pass you." I'm gonna solder all those wires together when I get a chance, that was really depressing that I found that, oh well But I made it without a hitch, enjoyed every second of it and cant wait to take my MSF.

BTW, it was pretty hot out seeing as I was wearing my heaviest pair of Carrhart flannel lined jeans, tall work boots, some thick leather driving gloves with like an entire goat for insulation, and my huge Carrhart quadruple layer sweater. :

Best advice that came in handy:

"Push right, turn right. Push left, turn left."

Those are 8 invaluable words to this new rider right here.

And my Shoei TZ-R was very comfy! Only fogged up a little from my hotass breath and sweaty head.

good to hear it, bro.... you're almost all legal now just need the MSF & License & you'll be fully legal 24/7.

I dunno if you REALLY needed a new battery, maybe just needed a good romp to charge it back up again, but it's worth the piece of mind, especially if it hasn't been ridden much in the past few months.

Yeah, it sat all winter on a trickle charger, then ran a few times in April, but thats it. Its a piece of mind, for $50 I just ensured I'm not going to be stranded if I leave the key on for 10 minutes. Another good pointer I got there as a way to prevent that......never turn the motor off with the kill switch, do it with the key, then you'll never worry about your lights killing the batt. Off I go to the g/fs house! Enjoy the evening everyone!

PS. - Damn, straight roads really ARE boring.
