Same here, no big problems with the seven Ducs I've owned. But I never did learn to do "valves and belts" every 6000 or 7500 miles, so I was paying $$$$ to keep them going. For a long time, I found it worth it.

Looking around at what’s out there, I’m throwing the KTM 790/890 Duke in my list of potentials. Had not considered these before, but sat on a 790 and have looked at a lot of reviews and they seem pretty appealing. Love how light the 790 feels. I’ve also been toying with the idea of selling the Scrambler since I haven’t been riding it much in the dirt since I got the 501, and in that case I guess I’d want to look at something that can tour at least fairly well. Which I guess wouldn’t be ideal for the Duke. That leads me back towards the Multistradas… Maybe that upcoming 890 SMT, but I don’t love the looks…

Same question about the coils; I obviously haven't hit that issue yet, but frying a gauge cluster is not what my wallet needs.
The judder spring mod completely fixes the grabby clutch issue; best $60 (plus labor) I ever spent.
Hyperstrada 821 is a gem of an all-around bike.

I’m kind of leaning towards waiting for the 890 SMT to be announced for the US after watching a bunch of UK based reviews… in any case I will probably wait a bit to make a decision unless a Speed Triple that’s exactly what I’m looking for pops up…

Yeah, I’m really specifically looking for an ‘08-‘10 or ‘11 SE Speed Triple in good shape with low mileage. I’d settle for an ‘05-‘07 though. Not much that’s really appealing to me nearby right now, there’s an orange one on FB I’m kind of interested in, but other than that most of what’s out there looks kind of beat or sus… I would prefer not to travel or ship, but we’ll see what happens. I just injured my knee last night, so I might not be doing much riding in the near future anyway.

@spooler any chance you can school me on scrambler exhaust? Mines a 2022, wanted akrapovic but it’s only available for 19/20, something about cat placement change?

Any exhaust from an older bike will fit up perfectly, but on ‘22+ you’ll be decating the bike by changing the end cans. Should help reduce heat somewhat, so as long as you don’t mind running without a cat it’s win-win.
Basically, the ‘19-‘21 had the cat in the header, the ‘22+ have the cat in the end cans. But headers and end cans from any year will fit up with each other and the mounting points on the bike.

There are a few guys who have put a 17 inch front on and mounted sporty tires. I think it’s fairly expensive as there aren’t any off the shelf 17 in front wheels that work, and maybe some fender issues too. In pics I don’t think they look that good, but that’s just me. Others have wondered if the change in steering geometry (which I’m no expert on) makes it worth doing. I can say I thought the bike handled beautifully on the road with stock wheels and Shinko 705s, although I haven’t ridden anything without a 21 inch front in years now, so maybe my perception is off.

I don’t believe they made a “S” version of the 796.
The 1100 had an S and then SP trim that had improved suspension/brakes/wheels.
@Whynot had a Hyper 796 with the 6+ gallon tank
I think $6k is probably on the high end for a 796 version.
The aircooled Ducs need valve checks every 7500 miles, so if you’re planning on racking up a ton of commuting, something to keep in mind. The later water-cooled models have 18,000 intervals, so that may be a better option for a commuter.
I think the Hyperstrada 939 I linked a few posts above is a great deal for $6k
