Theoretical question re: insurance and totalled bikes

Let's say I had a street bike, but totalled it by insurance standards. They have not yet sent me the check, but its clear they are going to total it. Any negative consequences to riding it until they get around to picking it up from me? Don't really know how this stuff works.

If it was borderline totalled I could see riding it giving them leverage to say it's not totalled, but we're talking damage well over double book of the bike. It's def. a total. Any reason I can't ride it until they want to come take it away?

    Hypothetically speaking, of course.

Only thing you have to worry about is it working enough to ride safely.

I had a bike "totaled" only cosmetics and tweaked forks. I rode it until they sent me a check. After I cashed the check and for years latter. Kept it insured with the same place the whole time. And it stayed registered as well.

This theoretical bike is totalled on cosmetics. Well, that and turn signals that broke off but function and can be taped back on temporarily to make it legit to ride. Thanks for the reply.
