    Thinking of a new bike

    Hey everyone,

I am thinking of trading in my 2004 Ducati monster 620 for a new Aprilia Shiver 750. I really like the looks of the bike and everything about it but I just dont know if I cant let my duc go.

    What are your guys opinion

    Thanks

    Dan

IMO, you've always gotta go with the one that makes you smile the most.

The shiver's definitely a sharp lookin bike... catch2otwo has one & loves it, although he's had some issues that needed to be addressed by the dealer.

Re: Thinking of a new bike

After seeing catch2otwo's Shiver break down on a ride with less than 100 mi on the ODO, I'm rethinking my love of that bike. Could be one of those "first model year" issues, who knows. I tend to wait a year and buy the second version of a bike, the little issues tend to get ironed out.

Re: Thinking of a new bike

well i bought one a few months ago. its broken down 3 times now, the last break down left it unable to move under its own power. the first two times were on the ride schleppy was referring to. went into limp mode out of the blue.

dealer scanned it for codes and its never done that again. probably a software glitch or sorts.

the last problem i had was the starter button sticking in and frying the starter. picking it up this weekend from the dealer (about 3 weeks down). it has been a very common problem with other shiver owners as well as a handful of other small but annoying problems such as misting dash clusters, circlips breaking off the levers, dead speedo sensors, and the almighty starter problem. dealer says that aprilia gave them a new wiring scheme to keep the starter button from sticking so it seems the manufac. is taking notice to the problems.

I know others would have been pissed by now if they were in my shoes but you have to realize its a first year model and there will be problems to sort out. if your ok with that, than it might be the bike for you. if you got more questions ask away. also check out the shiver forum over on AF1.

Coming from the RC-51 which are essentially worry free riding, isn't it
extremely frustrating for you? Luckily, it sounds like the dealer is taking
care of you and doing the right thing. Did they offer any type of "loaner" :

Def give us an update after you get some miles on it, I like that bike (shiver) and the daytona as middle weights, I know friends with aprilias and they haven't had any problems (milles, falcos etc).

Get a leftover MV Brutale...Aprilla's Shiver ripped off the Brutale style. Brutale is a much better and faster bike...best of the nakeds. I think Eastern Cycle in Beverly has a leftover.

I don't know, I think Aprilia has something here.

im frustrated i didnt have a bike to ride, but being a first year model theres nothing you can do but just go with it. but it better be the last thing. most owners havnt had any other problems after the ones i listed. no loaner

as for the brutale, shes a beauty but in a whole different class. more hp, more exotic, way more money. i can see the shiver ripping off the headlight but the brutale looks like a duc monster to me. but still an awesome machine never the less.

Go out and test ride them. I was in love with Triumph D 675's until I rode one. Nothing wrong with the bike, just not the bike for me.

    The XB series?

I love the styling, I like the concept, but I just can't get past the motor (runs out of breath QUICK), the shaking ()or the fit & finish of the switches or the dash. The horn, blinker, headlight, starter & kill switches look like they were made by Fisher Price.

The 1125R is a different story.

Re: Thinking of a new bike

the buells are nice. BUT if your comparing prices too then the xb series will be shot out of the sky in a hurry. compared to a new street triple, monster, or shiver it will be the most expensive out of the bunch and lack the most attention to detail. if it wasnt so much more expensive then the others, i probably would have bought one, but i wasnt going to spend more to get less. but there is always the used option.

got my shiver back saturday and rode it to work today. i swear i smelt the starter burning again and flicked the starter switch and it seemed to go away. i hope im just imagining things. still dont really have much confidence in it at this point.

6' 190 lbs. The bike felt like the rear was jacked way up with a good amount of weight on my wrists. I'm not sure I would say it was harsh, but it felt very unnatural to me. I went to the test ride with every intention of buying one, but I had a change of heart after ten minutes in the saddle. Again nothing wrong with the bike, just not what I was looking for.

Re: Thinking of a new bike

Yeah, the D675 seating position is pretty agressive. Definitely not upright like a monster, shiver, tuono, street/speed tripple, etc though.... but I've ridden worse torture racks

Better to give something that new a year to let the dust settle, then once the allure of its newness wears off and the quirks are fixed you pick one up for a song over the winter
