Re: Thinking about dual sport/ ADV bike
The tee dub is frickin' SLOW. Ancient technology. Even moreso than the DR650.

Re: Thinking about dual sport/ ADV bike
Am I the only one who noticed both members using this forum ended up with 890 adv-r’s?

That is because the 890 is a dream!

Re: Thinking about dual sport/ ADV bike
I considered the 890 but read taller riders may feel cramped

Re: Thinking about dual sport/ ADV bike
I rode the T dub. I felt the fat tire thing made it sucky turning on pavement. I understand small bike fanboi, but enjoyed XR's far more than a TW.
colin and clayton better go on a ride together now

Re: Thinking about dual sport/ ADV bike
Little :topic:, but since all the ADVers are here, thinking about picking up a set of Aux lights for the 690 duke, what's better than chinese noc-off but not $1k per light?
Street riding, looking for additional distance/brightness.

I put Denali lights on mine. I'm happy with them and how they integrated. Mine are setup to run at 50% until I hit high-beams, then full 100%

Re: Thinking about dual sport/ ADV bike
I’ve tried a handful of $20-60 Amazon lights, I’ll go through my orders and make a post with some links later.

Can you post a pic of your bike? I can’t zoom in enough on your avatar and wanna see that fly screen :)
Do you have the low seat? If so how different is it?

I’ve got the standard seat, pretty happy with it.

This is the standard Dart flyscreen, I also have the smaller Dart Piranha which I didn’t like as much. This one I can do interstate and while its not exactly fun I can tolerate it for a few hours if I have to. They make a larger one that I don’t have any experience with.

Re: Thinking about dual sport/ ADV bike
Very similar shape and size to the Triumph flyscreen, but you don’t have to take the headlight off and squeeze your hands in below the gauges to mount it.
-
Re: Thinking about dual sport/ ADV bike
I highly recommend replacing the Triumph hand guards with barkbusters if you plan to go off-road. The stock ones look nice but will snap easily and the levers mount at the same point, if I remember, potentially leaving you stranded.

Good call on the Dart, such an easy install. I can’t imagine trying to get behind the head lamp.
I wanted clear, was impatient and settle on “petrol blue”, it came in a box labeled Petrol Blue, but contained a clear screen!

Is that the Dart Marlin? How do you like it?
I had to get in behind the headlight to install the accessory power socket. You need either tiny hands or lots of socket extensions to do the job. Simple, but a pain in the ass.

Yup, dart Marlin. Haven’t tried it out, day six after testing positive for Covid, have some symptoms.

Yikes, good luck, feel better.

Re: Thinking about dual sport/ ADV bike
Once again reminded myself why DS/ADV bikes are the best. Did a 3 day ride through the PA Wilds, 1/2 of which was the MABDR. What a phenomenal time with surprisingly great weather, what was looking like a wet weekend turned out to be fantastic with only a passing shower Saturday and Sunday. We even got an entire state park campground to ourselves Sunday night, with hot showers and flushing toilets.

Re: Thinking about dual sport/ ADV bike
Is there any reason not to get a 790 adv-r and sell my FJ?
Found a killer deal on a relatively clean 790 adv-r for 2/3’s the price of an 890. Any major problems commuting on a one of these? My FJ is my main means of transportation until snow is on the ground and I expect to do the same with this. Deplaning on getting a 2nd set of wheels and run street or 80/20’s for the normal things and swap when riding a BDR or similar.

One big reason: the Africa Twin 1100 exists. Better road manners than the KTM and also it isn't orange.

Can you tell me more about the FJ? I want a big bike for SoCal 300-ish mile rides that’s 90% street, 10% dirt, comfortable for the slab, relatively economical, fast and fun, good wind protection, heated grips, luggage capable, and I loved my previous Yamaha’s.

They're pretty different bikes. Plenty of people commute on adventure bikes, but just realize that a 21/18 wheelset and tall suspension is not going to be as responsive in the corners as the 17/17 setup you'd be coming off of.
The other thing to consider is...it's a KTM. Yes they can be reliable (mine has 54k mostly trouble free miles on it), but they're also way more...quirky?...than Japanese bikes. That can mean a variety of different things, anything from "my cruise control occasionally doesn't set" to "the bike literally tried to kill me when the front brakes locked up on their own" (there's a front brake MC recall on the 790). Not trying to scare you off, but when you own a KTM vs a Japanese bike, you will need to prepare yourself for the possibility that you could end up pulling your hair out in frustration. And don't expect KTM dealers to be of any use, they are totally 100% worthless. If there was such thing as 110% useless, that's what they would be. I really can't overstate how useless and clueless they are. And KTMNA is of absolutely no use whatsoever, as well.
Again, don't mean to scare you off, just that you set your expectations appropriately. The bikes themselves are absolutely phenomenal machines, there's not many machines out there as exciting as KTM's. But that comes at a cost. Luckily as I said, I'm still rockin my 1290 6 years and 54k miles later and really don't have much to complain about, it's been very reliable and trouble free. And it's still absolutely incredible.
One last thing, he doesn't post here anymore but you can talk to chippertheripper over on advrider about his. He's had a 790R for a few years now.

Re: Thinking about dual sport/ ADV bike
Well deal fell through on the 790 and the FJ will remain in the garage for a little longer. Matt’s link is the bike. The only difference is I found out the cruise is actually a smartline cruise from a Fj forum inmate. Works perfectly.
SRT, I agree the performance comes at a cost. My race bike is a 790 duke and it is no where as reliable or easy to deal with than my older SV’s But man is it worth it on the days she runs well. I think throwing a leg over a 1290 sar & a 790/890 adv-r will give me a better feeling on which fits better. I commute daily and plan to continue that. Touring is always something I’ll continue to do. For the price of a 790/890 you can almost get a 1290 sar.
