    New tire "break in"?

    Hey guys,

New tires tend to be kind of greasy/slippery don't they? I haven't been riding long enough to put new tires on a bike.
Is there any way to quickly make them less slippery? Anything I can "wash" them with or anything? Or does it really just take ride time?

Reason I ask is it looks like the weather is going to be pretty nice this week, and with any luck I'd love to take the bike I bought from Ray to Napierville.

It has racing slicks on it right now which kind of scare me in 50º weather, so I'm tempted to put new street tires on it this week. But new greasy street tires probably wouldn't be an improvement.

    Thanks,

    Tommy

Race spec tires and slicks are real slippery if not up to temp....but DEF throw new sneakers on it and go....its not that bad and you just need to be a bit easy on the throttle. You can probably either scotchbright pad them and get some off but I wouldn't really worrie about it..

Yeah, and I have no way of warming the front tire (more important when trying to stop at 160mph at the top of the track.)
Drag racing isn't about being easy on the throttle.

Just take the bike for a decent ride once the new tires are on. 100 miles should do it. Take it really easy at first and give the tires a chance to scrub in. By the end of the ride they should be fine.

Please tell me you were not running slicks on the street. Especially this time of year.

Race compound tires take forever to warm up on the street.

Yeah for sure get rid of the slicks. New tires don't really require break in time. Everyone uses chrome molds nowadays so you don't have to scrub off the release agent like you use to. That said its never a bad idea to take it easy for a while and get use to what the new tires feel like on a bike.

    Re: New tire "break in"?

Cool. I'll get the street tires put on it ASAP.

    Thanks guys.

Oh and Doc, I won't say that I didn't, but I'll say that I'm not doing it now. Had to take it out a couple of times after buying it, right?
And if anyone wants good condition racing slicks, make me an offer because I don't need them.

    Re: New tire "break in"?

before I ever started track riding I could scrub in a set of street tires in less than 20 miles. I ride brand new street tires really no different than used ones. new tire, old tire, race DOT, race Slick, street tire, smoothness is always the way to go.

    Smoothness?
This bike isn't insured yet for street use so I won't be taking it on any 20-100mile rides before Saturday.

    Edit:
Oh, smoothness referring to how you drive? Gotchya.. I think.

I'm so awesome I ride without tires, I just use the metal rims and I also light them on fire.

You should never do whatever you're doing, because you'll die and I know more than you.

Definitely agree with you there. This thread was still helpful to know what my better options are though.

Don't most accidents occur within 5 miles of the home?

    Wirelessly posted (HTC EVO "DROID" : Mozilla/5.0 (Linux; U; Android 2.2; en-us; Sprint APA9292KT Build/FRF91) AppleWebKit/533.1 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/4.0 Mobile Safari/533.1)

If you feel so inclined, you can spray some contact cleaner or brake cleaner on a rag and wipe down the tire. It will remove most of the "oil" on the surface but other oils will work their way out as the tire heats up which will be difficult this time of year. If you are using them for the track then just run them for a couple laps and they will be fine
