    Tire life question?

I was pulling around the drive-thru at my local fast food place to pay for and enjoy my liter of cola. I mean yes, its basically a parking lot, but DAMN was that corner tight. I had less than a mile on the tire too, so I could hardly believe the bike would even stand up.

Tim, it takes less than two laps to scrub tires in. You think racers roll around for 150 miles before they go full speed?

    Pilot Sports?

For my next set , I was thinking of just doing a direct replacement, (BT101FF/BT101RF) Im comfortable withem and have had no complaints. Anyone here made the switch from the Bridgestones to the Michelin pilot sports? What did ya Think(comparison)>?ie. life span/traction etc...
I got a hook up from a friend who just opened a store. hes been selling a shit load of tires at sick prices to promote his shop. Thinking about grabbing a set in the next few months. any suggestions>?
BTW: Is it my OCD tendency or does anyone else notice a considerable difference in the way a bike rides just from the difference of 5 or 6 PSI in the tires?

    Tire life question?

I usually put my bike up on the sidestand and let the tire spin for 200 miles before I ride on a new tire.

    Tire life question?

Get some michelin pilot powers or pilot sports, pirelli diablos, dunlop qualifiers or somethin.... You said you wanted to do some trackdays next year, right? Get rid of the brickstones & get some decent sport rubber. OEM tires suck.

Uh, there IS a noticeable difference in 5-6psi in the tires.

Tires also don't last 3k on the track either for some reason...it's weird, like everything wears faster there, why is that?

Ok, so its not just me? I thought I was crazy or something when I thought my tires were wearing faster at the track. Especially the edges.

    Tire life question?

...and depending how you ride, and the type of carcass (both you ) and the tire are, there is a noticeable difference at any PSI change. Just some people are requiring the enth degree of traction and others are not .

Lower (cold) PSI's where not needed will generally just result in funky tire wear though.

It's not...actually if you gain some weight and get a literbike, that helps round out the wear pattern some

Yeah, im quoting Factory recommendations which are sometimes OVer kill for legal reasons but keep in mind Im talking specifically about street. Race tires are a completely different compound. Im pretty sure they're designed to hold better in the corners then in the straights.EX. I know a guy with a busa that has way to much money and work done to his bike. The bike is putting out more power than the stock rods etc.. were designed to handle. He had another friend of mine put race tires on his bike for the street after he was warned not too. HE comes back a few days later wondering why he didnt feel as stable Blasting the shit out of his bike in a straight line on some expressway. Analogy: THink of a water balloon rolling straight( the wobble back and forth, left to right up and down, Now roll it on its side at an angle in a curved line. which appears more stable?? Not the best analogy, but its the best i can think of. Your right, Iam being over the top about scrubbing in for street tires, but im a freak dude, I like to be absolutley sure so I go overboard. A habit I need to work on.

    Tire life question?

The racers can correct me but I'd think the #1 issue with race tires + mondo HP bike + street would be the heat thus traction coeffecient. It would never get warmed up properly and evenly, specially on a bus. on the highway...I'd think it would make for a good tire torture test though?

As far as I know, tires are 'scrubbed in' to remove casting wax or whatever mold release agent's magically permeate the surfaces of the tire during construction. These agents are not as traction providing as rubber.
The assumption is that the combined heat cycling and mild wear on the rubber surface will 'scrub' the release agent off the skin of the tire and make it more sustainable for consistent traction and normal riding.

I went back home and checked the pressures. the front was at around 30 and the rear was somewhere between 36 and 39. I filled em back to spec.( that im used too) and IT was a World of difference. I asked the PSI question out of fear of getting burned by everyone if I shared noticing a NIGHT and Day feel on my bike just by the difference of a few psi in either tire. I never realized how much of a difference a few psi made. I guess im going back to checking the tire pressure every other ride.

    Tire life question?

aight, i'm not even gonna read the last few novels that have been posted... but i'm gonna say that street tires are direct descendants from the race tires of "yesterday". a set of street tires don't need 150-200 friggin miles to scrub in... i scrubbed in a set of Metzler M1's (street tires, not race tires) within 10 miles of getting them... just slowly work your way to the edges a few times & they're scrubbed... done.... thrash em all you want, that's what they're friggin made for.

put a set of pilot sports or powers on, work em to the edge, bang they're scrubbed.

    Tire life question?

I have gone to 3 trackdays with fresh tires with 0 miles on them. They were "scrubbed in" in 2 laps.

I have heard that racers run on new tires with only the parade lap (or whatever its called, before the race starts) for scrubbing in.

depends on the tires and their coating. I've gone out for many races brand new for the warm up lap and taken the holeshot.

It's all water under the bridge, and we do enter the next round-robin. Am I wrong?

    Tire life question?

You want those tires to stick??? Here's the trick, get the front and rear tires up on stands, shoot a nice big and rub it all over the tires!!!!
