Tire storage question

What is the proper storing technics for tires off a rim?

I've heard that tires get hard sitting around. Just wanted make sure that if there was a proper way to store them, I was doing it. I have a set of Q2's in the box they came in.

Maybe Duncan or one of those guys might know?

As far as I know........that and don't put 50 lbs of random stuff on them and let it all sit for months on end.

So a dry basement or garage is fine? I have the pair just sitting in the box they were delivered in. It's not climate controlled, but figure the heat is probably worse than cold, right?

heat, moisture, UV, and having weight put on them are things I like to avoid.

Other then that you should be fine unless you plan on storing them for 25 years lol

Cold isn't to bad unless it gets around freezing, tires can freeze and Crack.

contrary to the storage covers, tires should NOT be stored in a stack, weight of the tires compresses the beads, when you go to put them on, you will have a harder time seating the beads especially the tires closer to the bottom of the stack

I like to keep my tires off of bare concrete, as I worry about it drawing moisture out of the tire, and the bare concrete seems to get colder than anything else around it, which can't be very good for the tire either.

Michelin gives a tire 10 years in proper storage. In 10 years, they find only a 1.5% performance drop in the older tire compared to the new.

Freezing is only an issue if they are mounted without being brought up to a proper room temp. Tires ship from Europe all winter long on container ships. The North Atlantic is not the warmest place on earth.

Street tires and freezing is not a big issue since MOST rubber contains an additive package to deal with those conditions - otherwise how could you ride in the cold weather and not damage the tire?

The exception to the freezing rule is road race rubber. ALL of our crack issues is with racing rubber since by design they won't be used in cold weather and then lack the additives to prevent freeze damage.

Easy tips - keep out of sunlight, away from UV sources, off concrete, above 50 degrees is best.

Tires have no moisture, which is why they cannot "dry rot".

A bead is a wound steel band. If the bead deforms the tire won't seal. Companies like Vee Rubber ship their tires from Thailand in "smokestacks" so the bottom ones are compressed for long trips. No issues.

Cheng Shin from China would take smaller tires and bundle them in piles of twenty, so tight the bundle was tiny. Look like hell but with a tube popped right into shape.

What we usually see is the sidewalls being compressed. This is a problem with bias-ply cruiser tires. They get crushed so much they do not want to expand and mount on a tubeless rim. This issue is what almost made HD drop Michelin with Commander fitments. So Michelin began shipping Commander with cardboard inserts to keep the beads / sidewalls far apart. Problem solved!

its nice to not have to use a donut or belt to get the beads to spread, the issue is worse with wide car rims

Three years ago, I spent about an hour at one of my shops fighting a HD Fatboy rim, trying to get a Commander on it to seat. Tubeless application. Tie-down straps, air, donut's etc. We had to put a tube in it.

This was before they began the cardboard inserts. The Michelin Pilot Activ would do this too for certain rims. When the shop is billing flat rate for tire jobs, this was not the best use of their time.
