Well I finally got a bike that doesn't need more ponies (yet)
In the past I routinely threw out my paper element and stuffed in a K&N then jetted it and thought I was too cool. Rarely did I actually notice anything...
Anywho The K&N patent must be long dead. With the killer power wars, if they really worked then you would think that the factories would be all over that technology; but no they're not.
I don't think its noise cause I don't think the K&N is noticeably louder.
Now maybe the K&N will filter dust if you service it every hour or does it just keep out the rocks. I have no doubt that grit carrying road spray would ooze through them into the intake track.
I also think that the hyper rpms we are doing make digesting abrasive powder more of a problem then in the past.
I am off the "filterCharger" band wagon and will just change the paper like every 3500 or per season.

The new gen gix's have a high efficiency filter already. K$N after market filters actually degrade the bike's performance. If you use a K&N like I do, you need to blow out a lot of the oil. Then they are fine.
I thought the same about the intakes, after half a race season in the pouring rain, I pulled the air box and everything was spotless clean.

hmmm now u got me thinking, would it be worth pickin up a k&n for my yzf 600?
The 929 also lost 2hp with the K&N. Back in the day when the stock filters were crap there was a gain to be had, but not anymore. I used a BMC filter on the 929 and was happier with it, especially for quality. The K&N was junk rubber with a smaller than stock filter element, BMC was rigid plastic with an identical sized element as stock.

BMC is the way to go....Most K&N applications duplicate the stock filter, and it's reusable.
Kawasakis have a great stock filter...
