    New tires and mounting...

What should I expect to pay??? I called andersen and I think they can get me out the door for $360 for michelin pilot road tires f/b mounted. Called MTR in RI and they said they will not mount tires unless I buy from them and they'd charge $435. So should I go with the $360 or order the tires for $220 and go through the trouble of having a friend of a friend mount them for me?? Opinions appreciated

    Thx,

    -F

Depends on what your time is worth..

If you gotta drive the tires over to your friends house, then drive home, ride the bike back, change the tires, ride home, take the car back, pick up the old tires, etc.. maybe it's not worth it.

For the $140 difference you can buy all the tools you need to mount them yourself. That's what I did about 10 sets of tires ago.

I just went through the same thing myself... I paid $218 for a pair of Avon Azaro's (St45/46) Mail order. I was gonna have local shop dismount the old rubber and mount new along with balancing them. But I ended up mounting em myself And ended up having to pay $30 for the shop to spin balance em (I wouldn't pay that again)
You should be able to dismount, mount & balnce iem your self in about an hour

I paid $30 per tire last winter to have Rochester Motorsports mount and balance tires. (I removed the rims from the bike myself).
Like Stoink wrote, I think I may invest in some tools so I can do it myself this winter. (unless a certain someone buys the fancy setup they were thinking about buying... )

While I may not be getting the 'fancy setup' I had originally planned to (this year anyway), I WILL be setting up some type of tire changing 'station' set up in my garage over the winter...

Most balancing machines I have seen cost alot more than a few tire changes at the dealer. What type of machine are we talking?

My balancer consists of 2x10 and plywood scraps. Works just fine. Spin balancers are just to speed up the process while allowing a dumber operator to mount tires.

    1) Yes, JC is now in posess of his tire changing/balancing schtuff...

    2) To balance the tires, all you need is two heavy duty jack stands (READ: tall enough) and you're wheel's axle. Just make sure the axle is level when laid across the two jack stands. Takes all of about 5 minutes per tire...

    3) It's not even remotely difficult to balance a motorcycle tire. Keep in mind that everything is CENTERED on the wheel, and everything on/within the wheel is CENTERED. Makes for a fool-proof balance act...

Car and truck wheels are offset in one direction or another, making balancing tires much more crucial. My big truck has like, TEN grams of weights on 'em. Usually use about 1/2 gram or so on my m/c tires...

Ed and I did Jay's race rubbers last winter. It's easy if you have the equipment and knowledge.

I can't wait till Jay gets the goods, we go through a few at Stonnerstock!

    Yaba caba, una mas cervesa!

The tires can be put on and mounted tomorrow.. And seeing as its getting cold, and I want to do a little riding and the front tire I have on there is sliding all over the road and squirming under braking. I figure I'll get it done and sell the bike with the new tires on it that way its safe to ride again. Originally i was going to go with pilot roads since its getting cold.. but I figure if anyone buys the bike (i'm selling it) they'll want stickier rubber so i went with the dunlop 208s they had in stock..

    Thx peeps,

    -F
