Title/registration/insurance stuff after selling a bike in MA

Ok, I sold my bike (yay!! ) - well almost. still need to drop it off. Could someone tell me what to do with registration after selling a bike in MA? Am I supposed to take the plate off and send it to the RMV, or does the plate stay with the bike? Is it safe to let the new owner ride around with my plates?

Does the bike need to be inspected before it can be registered?

And if the buyer is writing a check, am I supposed to hang onto the title until the check clears, and then mail it to her?

Hmm, that's all I can think of for now....

    1. you turm plates into registry when sale is complete.

    2. bike has 14 days(?) to be inspected after it has been register by new owner.

    3. ask for a certified bank check (verifys money is in account), which is almost equivilant to cash and hand over the title then. if a normal check bounces and you signed the title over then there isn't much you can do.

    1. you turm plates / registration into registry when sale is complete. but i think you need to cancel the insurance first. check in with your insurance company.

one more thing, you need to turn the plates in to the RMV, then they will give you a receipt for having received the plates which you will need to give to your insurance agent in order to discontinue coverage on the bike.

    The others have said it.

    1. Take plate and registration to RMV and get proof from them that you've done this.

    2. Take that proof to your insurance agent to discontinue coverage.

    3. I wouldn't let a stranger ride around on my plates/registration/insurance. Especially, since they aren't covered on your insurance.

    4. I believe the new owner will have 7 days to get it inspected after registration. They will need to insure it and have proof of insurance when they go to register it... some RMV form.

    5. If they're writing a personal check... DEFINITELY hold onto the title. Ask for cash... or go to their bank with them and get the check cashed.

They would be covered, just like if you let a friend ride it. But if something happens, you are also liable(sp?).
