Randy, Why not just get a beemer GS? There are 300k plus examples out there, and a community that really supports high mile riders, etc. Plust they are sweet bikes. I think the buy in would pay off after the miles really start piling on.

The Beemer will go 2-3 times as far at twice the price... Seems to work out OK financially, but I suppose you pay more up front with the BMW...

I won't be making anyone's payments anytime soon...

Obviously not quite what you do for mileage but I have roughly 54 - 55k on my 97 TLS (first year they made them) and the motor still pulls damn well. It doesn't burn any oil that I notice and the only issue I have had with it is Suzuki's lame excuse for a slipper clutch that I don't think they use any more on the new bikes.

Like Beet said, check out www.tlzone.net as there are many TL owners there to draw from.

I just picked up an 04 gs1150adv with all the farkels on it and 7000miles for 10300 and I'm currently looking at an 05 1200gs with 3700 miles for 12500 so there are plenty of low mileage examples of beemers out there , expect to pay from 12-14k for a newish 1200 gs ..

    Beet,

It has never been the plates or the springs. The three times it has been taken care of it has been because the ramps on the slipper clutch mechanism have developed a sort of flat spot which when rolling off the throttle and then rolling smoothly back on the throttle would hang up the re-engagement of the clutch plates causing slippage. If I was getting hard back in the gas it wouldn't be a big deal it would just hop right over the flat spot and engage without issue. Only on the smooth roll ons so frquent when doing long highway rides was it an issue.

Until the last time it was covered under warranty from Suzuki so it was no big deal, they replaced everything. Last time I had to pay for it and I replaced everything just because, and it was expensive. If there is a next time I will probably just do the slipper assembly and the springs.

None of the times my clutch has been apart has there been any excessive wear on the clutch plates themselves. I'm actually pretty nice to my bikes when it comes to clutch abuse.

    I can get an 07 strom1k for $8k

NO, I didn't bend a rod, I thought I had a slightly bent valve, but maaybe not, valve guides were all worn well beyond service limits, one exaust valve in the front cylinder so loose in the guide, that the valve didn't seat right resulting in 90psi compression in that cylinder, rear cylinder was an almost perfect 210psi

pistons and rings are just at service limits so they need replaceing, but all my oil consumption was thru the worn valve guides

camchains are also worn waaayy beyond service limits, requiring the case to be split

other than that bottom is good

My bro has had BMW offer to buy his GS back because it's been so fucked up, spending more time in the shop than on the road. First year, but still total bullshit. I think any value associated with them is primarily "perceived value."

another reason I am hesitant to buy a GS, as many miles as I have travelled, I have had occasion to stop and help stranded motorcyclists, what do you think myh experience is for most often broken down bike is? not harley, at least twice as often, a bmw

I agree that BMW is perceived value and service costs are 2 times what you would experience.

If you can afford multiple bikes I have to put in a word for my

    BURGMAN 650

As a commuter it is a total pleasure. Great storage, no chain, good brakes. Real world protection for your lower half. remove the engine cover and you almost got heat for the winter.

The handling is good but I do scrape on slow speed turns and a very severe bump does bottom out the suspension.

The CVT transmission works great you will NOT miss shifting. Note there is a manual paddle shift mode if you have too plus a power mode that moves the shift points higher.

In a drag race with 600 sportbikes it is only about 6 lengths behind in a 1/2 mile. They are surprised.

I hope that the design and execution of the Burgman was toward a commuter vehicle. I think the engine is in its sweet spot due to the CVT most times. Real world heavy fisted mileage is 48 to 52 but mine is hardly broken in. You would think that it would last longer being less stressed and horizontal motor but I have no data.

Get a used 1 on ebay for around 5K and then a used sv etc for 3 K
