I would go at least 16-18" away on each side from the tire's center line.
I have my (fixed) tie down anchors about as close as realistically possible. Off the top of my head: 18" from the tire center line and maybe 12" forward from the rearset. I usually tie down at the bike's lower subframe-to-frame attachment point. The straps come very close to bodywork on some types of bikes...but w/ e-track you could move the anchor back.
My trailer is 6.5' wide and I put 2 bikes side by side; center tie-down is shared. One huge thing to keep in mind is that I have an open (landscape) trailer. If enclosed, it will be a PITA to strap down the side by the wall. In either case, also keep in mind that you need really short straps (i modifed a set I have and they work awesome...can post up a pic if anybody really cares). But these reasons are why strapless stands really kick ass.
