    Track/Dirtbike dilemna!!

So this is the first full season that I will be racing up at Loudon. My issue is now that the Crf450 is going to be a ful track only bike, I now do not have a dirt toy.

    So do I'

    1. Keep the crf as a full track bike and buy a used 250 for the woods?

    2. Keep the Crf as my woods bike and buy a KTM for the track???

    Hints? Suggestions?

sounds more like a banking question... if you've got the green around for the ktm why not get it? (then again i'm not a motard guy so there might be technical reasons)

How much and how hard do you think you're going to be riding in the woods and dirt? Would a street legal dual purpose fit in? What can the bank account and the garage space support? How modified is the CRF - can it do double duty with an extra set of wheels?

If you pick up another CFR - should the need arise - you can canabalize one to make the other race/ride ready.

Buy a cheap 2 smoker for the woods. The CRF is still top dog on pavement. The KTMs are catching up, but only with 110CC advantage.

    Track/Dirtbike dilemna!!

Swapping back and forth is a total pain in the balls just to save myself 2500 bucks and buy a woods bike. So keeping the CRF for woods and track is out of the question.

Bank and space is not a question. Just don't think I want to drop 6000 on a KTM.

So I think I am going to go with option 1 and keep the CRF450 for the track and buy a 250 two smoker for the woods, or if I find a decent 4stroke 250 for cheap I'll check it out.

    Thanks for the replies.

I'm an intermidiate rider, novice woods racer. For me, the 2-stroke is faster, 4-stroke is easier. A few expert woods racers I know have cut faster times on 125 smokers, vs. 250. The bigger guys tend to favor the 450f bikes. The 250f bike is probably the best choice if you want to play around, and maybe race (if you're not fully comitted -- read, "don't have time to practice"). The 250 smoker beats me up, but I don't care. It's the most fun out of all of them, and doesn't beat me up as badly as a 450f does. If not racing at all, I'd like a 450f to play ride with. I don't have the stamina & speed to maximize a 125 on a race course, which is what it takes to be competetive with one.

You should just get another CRF450 for the woods too, call it your spares bike

I have a fresh out of the crate (ok 29 miles on it) 2005 CRFx I'll be listing f/s shortly, which has nothing to do with my advice above .

Realllllllllllllllllllyyy? What year? 250x or 450x.

There may be no need to list it here.

I was also considering getting a 450r for track duty and keeping the X for the woods.

That wouldn't be a bad thing...It's a 2005 450x I bought new in Oct 05, completely stock except for a Flatland Racing skidplate (kickass). I also have a spare oil filter, an NGK IX plug or two, and a brandy new TwinAir filter (in the bag). I have the manual it came with as well as the Factory service manual for it too. This is the same bike I had mentioned to you when you had that water pump dilemma, but no I haven't actually offered or loaned out any other pieces off of it

I would think the X on the track woud be geared more optimally but I've never compared the two. I just wanted the e-start after my 03 YZ450 wore out my AXO's so I knew I didn't want the R. Almost got the 250x but I'm 6' 250# and the 4x was better for clearing unplanned logs, canyons, etc.
