    Re: Trailer Recommendations

Being such a light trailer, getting it perfectly level isn't all that important. You can always get a rise/drop hitch locally once it's all together.

That said, I think it was around a foot high.... mid-shin height, maybe a little higher. Perfect for maximum cursing when you walk into it.

    Re: Trailer Recommendations

I've got it folded up now under my deck, but here's a pic of it loaded up to my 6.

Tomorrow I'll put the ball on the hitch and measure to the ground. Ideally, I'd probably want another inch or two of rise, but this one came with the hitch and was close enough.

Big long thread on these on Advrider. Some of the setups are really clever.

My tip is to put three or four D ring anchors down the side, and one center front and rear. Doesn't take long or cost much and makes life easier.

    Re: Trailer Recommendations

I'm looking at these trailers at Tractor Supply

    5x8or

    6x8

    5½x10

the 5x8s are cheapest and meet my minimum requirements to haul my Kymco UTV, the wood floor is $100 more regular price, but on sale now for same price as the mesh floor model$699. They only have a 1-7/8" coupler and 13" wheels and no jack

the 6x8 is 2" coupler, A-frame + jack, but still 13" wheels, on sale now for $899

the 5½x10 is also 2" coupler, A-frame cargo carrier + jack and 15" wheels, for $1099. The extra length gives me room to carry a spare set of wheels without sticking them in the back of the UTV and other cargo (gas cans etc.) in the A-frame

I'm leaning toward spending the extra $400

another question, is should I get chains & turnbuckle or binders to tie down, or ratchet straps

    Re: Trailer Recommendations

I've had a Snowbear/whatever label of the week/etc Canadian trailer, same MFG for Tractor Supply, Lowes, Home Depot, etc with 13" wheels, no issues there. I broke the main weld holding tying the tow bar to the frame just ahead of the axle a few years ago, it's since been repaired badly with a U bolt and creative drilling... 11 years old, beaten on, lives in the snow, still kicking. If I knew how to weld I could fix it properly but I'm too lazy to bother with it. If I'm feeling extra nice I'll strap in a second u bolt one of these days.

The paint oxidizes and flakes pretty quickly, the fenders loosen up, and the lights fail over time as the spring clips for the wiring loose tension. But for the price they can be treated as disposable in which case they'll surprise you with how long they'll go.

If you decide you want a 5x8 I'll be selling mine when I get around to listing it.

It's the Lowes version of the Carryon, so it has 12" wheels.

I added pressure treated decking with d ring tie-downs, a harbor freight wheel dolly and greased the wheel bearings. It's 3 years old, lived in my garage last winter and has maybe 2,000 miles on it.

$500 for whoever is interected here before it goes on Craigslist.

I've read some reviews like yours about welds breaking, paint flaking, etc, one of the reasons I am leaning toward an A-frame model.

Would loctite on fender bolts and zip ties on the wiring help ? maybe repainting with decent paint when I first buy it help ?

been watching CL for some time, everything is see is way bigger than I need and more $$ or home made and heavy

I have a home made trailer now that is 4" too narrow for my Kymco, I was thinking of re-decking it to the width I need, but twisted the coupler backing it up with a heavy load in my muddy driveway last spring, now its more work and $ than it's worth to re-deck and weld a new coupler on, and heavy as hell,

And that's why I didn't even consider offering you anything other than what you were asking for it. After owning this one I Would never consider those box store models. Who was the guy that built that? He does nice work!

On the fenders, they're bolted on via two long tabs, made of fairly thick metal. The nuts are secured by a press indenting a point into the bolt on one nut face. Over time the nut doesn't move, but the tab wears from vibration, so as they beat themselves thinner they let the fender flop, and because of the swedged face on the nut you can't tighten the assembly up better.

On the wiring the wires just push into the lamp assemblies. Behind the holes is a piece of brass that gets shoved away when you push the bare copper through, and then it 'bites in' when you pull back on the wire to lock it in. It's just plain crap. I spent $20 on a set of LED waterproof assemblies and soldered the existing leads to the new lights, no issues since.

Fresh paint, or keeping up with touching it up when you spot it starting to grey should keep the surface rust away. Also pay attention to any spots water can collect, on mine if I leave the front gate down water collects in the top of the gate as it's now a low spot with no drain holes, aka instant inside rust.

    Re: Trailer Recommendations

I came real close to picking up the Tractor Supply 6x8, the guy I bought my last bike from had one and it was definitely decent quality.

Then I realized I could just rent a Uhaul motorcycle trailer for $30 for 2 days. Dirt cheap.

The Uhaul is also way, way more sturdy than a utility trailer. But if it's too much for your car to haul, they have utility trailers as well. Anyway, worked out really well and super cheap.

Randy. Talk to REP Enterprises in Greenland. They carry a line of aluminum open cargo trailers. Both Ox and I have them. Ox has a larger version but they are the same basic trailer. Rock solid, very well built and have lasted very well for me.

Runner up would be Alton Motorsports just south of the lake. They sell Mission brand trailers and I think they are pretty good too. They sold me my EZHauler cargo trailer and were pretty good to me.

I too was unimpressed with what was on CL.

You want me to build my own trailer? That would be .. bad.

FWIW: I didn't look at a single trailer that was imported. Most were manufactured down south, TN or FL. I believe the one I bought was made in Maine.
But maybe there's a joke here somewhere I'm missing.

that may very well be the way I go initially, I was checking that out last night, I can get a 5x9 open utility trailer for $99 for a 4 day weekend

ya, much of what is on CL is used box store trailers either they want $100 less than new if its still in decent shape, they need so much work that by the time you get it in roadworthy shape you have more $$ than buying new or its home made and heavy as shit on god only knows what kind of axle

thanks for leads, I have to check out Rochester Motorsports to see what they have as well, as I can probably work my best deal there, likely a swap for work that I am doing for them, however, I am intrigued by ProLine in Milton, they are close, I can go right to them an get one custom built to my needs as none of the standard dimensions/features are exactly what I would like

after taking it over with my company staff, ideally, something that will hold my Kymco UTV, and 2 atvs or at minimum the Kymco and 1 atv or 2 atvs

a flat bed with tie down bar around the perimeter with 6'-4" x 16'-6" would be perfect with a pair of ramps that lock into the tie down bar, and dual axle with brakes on at least one axle, made of aluminum, built so that I could add stake body sides

I could keep the weight down low enuf to tow all three at once with my Grand Cherokee, it would be versitile enuf to haul 16' lumber

    Re: Trailer Recommendations

Fwiw 78" is typically as wide as a trailer deck can be without going to a deck-over axle configuration. This allows for axle width and fenders with the trailer staying within DOT regulations for maximum vehicle width.

yes aware of that, 6'4" is 76"

6'-4" allows a ATV to be loaded sideways 16'-6" allows 2 atvs loaded from side and 8'-4" utv to be loaded conventionally with no overhang

although, my UTV overall length is 8'-4" (54" wide) I can load it on an 8'x5' trailer with body overhanging the atvs can fit sideways on a 6' bed with overhang

Ok so you're looking for a side ramp as well?

If you find one that meets the dimensional requirements but doesn't have a side ramp, I could certainly fabricate one for you.

Yep, I can handle that. Would be best to bring it down to my barn and leave it with me for a week.
