    Trailer Registration Issues

Here's the problem: I have a car registered in Maine (don't ask) and my bike is registered here in Mass. I want to get a trailer to haul my track bike, but I'm being told by my insurance company (bike) that I can't register a trailer in Mass. without a car registered in Mass. They didn't like the idea of linking the trailer registration to my bike.

Any ideas on how I get around this? Is anyone aware of an insurance carrier in Mass. that would allow me to tag the trailer registration to my bike? Assume that registering the trailer in Maine with the car is not an option. Thanks.

i linked mine to my bike - i just stuck to the fact that an R6 can trailor a 4x8 trailor and the woman just made it happen

no seriously, i did - they cant deny you because it just technically has to be linked to a currently registered vehicle

That makes sense to me. I know the guy who owns the insurance agency that I use. I'm going to talk to him. Which insurance agent do you use in case I need to make a change?

I have never registered a trailer, so this is new to me, but you need to have a registered vehicle to register a trailer? That doesn't even make sense? What if you don't have a towing vehicle and just have other people tow your trailer for you? I searched the RMV site but didn't see anything about this.

I'm still trying to understand this, but it seems to be an insurance issue. You need insurance for the trailer that needs to be linked to liability insurance that you carry on another Mass. vehicle. The insurance agent needs to stamp that you have insurance for the trailer before the RMV will do anything. Basically a scam by insurance companies to ensure that you carry more insurance than you really need.

yeah - but all it really does is add 15 bucks a year to your insurance and it goes under the auto insurance you have... you cant go to the registry with and uninsured car either - so it works the same way

True, but in other states there is no requirement for insurance on a trailer. I believe (though I am no expert) the towing vehicle becomes the insuring vehicle automatically. Again I am no insurance expert, but I do know other states do not require insurance to reg a trailer. Fucking Mass always making things complicated.

    Register the trailer in Maine?

The gixxer idea may not work since it is not registered at all. Maybe you could put a hitch on your 1098?

    Trailer Registration Issues

Another interesting insurance twist is that if you use and out of state registered trailer with your MA vehicle and have an accident, the insurance for your vehicle will not cover the loss of the trailer contents, it will cover the trailer. At least that is how 2 insurance companies explained it to me (different carriers) a few years ago. Hopefully they changed that!
