Are trailers required to be insured in Mass?

I'm looking at an Aluma single bike folding trailer.

Does mass require insurance to register? If so, did you add it to your auto or motorcycle policies?

If it is not required, should I insure it anyway?

Trailers are covered by the tow vehicles policy when attached. They're not insured separately, even if they have a VIN.

Reg it in Maine and save $$$$$. No residency requirements.

Yes, you can so everything online/mail. I never went there when I registered my trailer. My car trailer was the same price for 5 years as it was for 1 in MA and there is no excise. https://mainetrailerregistrations.com

Does anyone know how the Maine registration process works if you have insurance on your trailer? I have an enclosed trailer and have a separate policy on that. I've love to save reg money as its a dual axle but was worried about the insurance aspect. Figured my insurance co would be suspicious my truck is registered in mass but trailer in maine.

Original poster -> Trailers are $30 a year to reg in mass, no insurance. No clue why you'd bother doing the Maine deal.

State Farm let me put my enclosed trailer on its own policy... its cheap money for the peace of mind knowing that its covered if anything happens to it while its not connected to the vehicle.

Depends on the trailer. There's a reason a lot of semi trailers are tagged in Maine. I save considerably on a car trailer as well.

The last little trailer I had was $30 per year but then MA charged me excise on a $2000 value even though you can buy them new all day long at Tractor Supply fur $500. Fuck MA. All my trailers are being tagged in Maine from now on. Sick of getting gouged arbitrarily.

My boat trailer costs me $100 a year because it is titled as 5000# gross.
Be aware that most insurance coverage when under the tow vehicle is liability only. Check with your insurance as to what they cover. That extra $150 a year for the trailer coverage could be worth it.

It's based on GVWR, $20/thousand lbs.

Does AAA cover trailers if your car breaks down? We have unlimited trailer coverage from BoatUS, it’s $14 Per year add on. But maybe AAA covers it.

My understanding is that you have to have a trailer rider from AAA. But I have no first hand knowledge.

I'd like to do the ME plating but was worried about being denied insurance claims if they decided to argue the point about where it's actually parked/stored. Valid concern or no?

Re: Are trailers required to be insured in Mass?

I saw a Mass resident in front of the judge last week after State cop pulled him over, he presented Mass license, but car was registered in Maine. Cop ticketed him for not registering the car in mass...so obviously, if you own the car and trailer, have them registered in different states, and get pulled over, it gives the cop something else to torture you over.

    It’s all about the money...

Is your trailer insurance through the same company as your vehicle insurance? Either way, with what company is the trailer insured? Would like to insure mine separately; Geico won't let me.

$30/yr in MA vs. $99/5yrs in ME seems worth it.

Do you have SF for auto too?

Not the basic AAA coverage. This is one of the reasons I dropped AAA. With your AMA membership comes roadside assistance for auto, m/c, trailer, and RV.

Re: Are trailers required to be insured in Mass?

I spoke with my insurance company about reg’ing a trailer in Maine and insuring it through MetLife which is my auto insurer.

They said if anything happens where insurance is needed, it would be a very grey area. Almost to the point they may not cover it.

So my big enclosed trailers are Reg’d in MA but my open cheap trailers are reg’d in Maine with no ins coverage
