    Chain talk

I am in the process of picking out a chain and sprocket set and just realized how much I don't know about chains.

Are there any advantages to buying a gold versus a non-gold chain?

How much of this site is true?
    http://www.quality-cycle.com/truth_a...cle_chains.htm

I like to think that at the end of the day most of the off the shelf chain and sprocket kits will work but being an engineer I want to get a feel for what is going on here. No sense in leaving anything to chance.

Any personal experiences would also be good.

    TIA

i believe the gold is just for bling, and no actual performance gains. just make sure you get a rivet master link, if the chain comes with a clip on

I replaced an OEM 25,000 mile EK with a low to mid-grade DID and only got 18,000 miles of use from it. The next chain, a high-grade EK lasted 28,000 miles. For me, the extra cost of the high-grade chain was worth it and I replaced the high grade EK with a high-grade Regina.

This will be on an F4i. From the looks of things, I should be able to skate by with anything over 8000lbs tensile.

Anyone run a non-O-ring chain? Can you even buy those?

Yes, you can get non-o-ring, x ring, o-ring. 510 (?), 520, 530, etc.. A gaggle of different sprockets in just about any size and material.

It comes down to your application and intended use. Aluminum sprockets and non o-ring chains are great for racing but, crap for touring, etc, etc, etc.. The variables are nearly endless.

Pick your application and intended use and then go to a company you trust. They'll do the math and recommend a sprocket and chain set to match your needs.

FYi - If you have a street bike or touring machine that you change the gearing on for different conditions, it's a good idea to have "sets". Sprockets and chain that have worn as a set rather than changing just the sprockets. Swapping out pieces in a set wears everything out quicker.

Go with steel sprockets and and decent 530 rivet-type o-ring chain and be done with it.

Do the older 600's have 530 or 525 chains? I think they are 525 but I am not positive.

EK X-Ring chains are great. If you go with an EK get the MVXZ. The 520 is 9300 lbs and the 525 and 530 are 9600 lbs.
