    Trip to Europe..

This will be a report that gets updated as i get time.

I had been planning this trip for about a year now, a 2 week stay in Finland to visit a friend. My air time up to this point was very limited, so it was a bit stressful at first to travel like this alone. My total trip duration was 16 hours, 35 minutes one way, and almost 11 hours in the air. When I booked my flight, I looked at the times and chose the flights with the shortest layover times! While it worked for me this time by luck, I'm not sure I would do that again.

Boston, Logan airport...Finnair flight opperated by American airlines..priority boarding which was nice.

    Sunset over the Atlantic

From Boston to paris, France was a long but comfortable flight..7 hours and 35 minutes!
My layover here was a bit over 2 hours, which wasn't bad as it took an hour to get through security and find my connection gate. I got some breakfast at the airport and the spent my first Euro's..haha
This is where it got tricky...Boarded the connection flight to Helsinki but this connection was delayed 30 minutes for slow boarding reasons..then another 20 minutes from air traffic control for missing the time slot to take off. I only had a 1 hour 10 minute layover at Helsinki so I was sure at that point, I was going to miss my final connection.

    waiting...

Once in the air, already 50 minutes late, we were again warned of more delays from head winds...great!! Just before landing in Helsinki, all connecting flights were listed on the drop down TV's..I saw mine listed at gate 23. As the plane I was on was heading into the gate, we passed the gate number I was connecting to..and there was no plane there? Could I be that lucky..or did the plane leave 5 minutes ahead? I showed up at the gate 5 minutes after the take off time only to see a large group of peaple all waiting there. I got lucky and my connection to Oulu was also delayed by 45 minutes. Awesome luck for a change..haha I even had time to read the Helsinki times..which I found add was printed in English..

I was at my destination 17 hours, 35 minutes later..and exhausted. My friend picked me up from the airport and we went back to his farm where I showered, ate and went to bed.

The first day started out at the MX track for a national competion. We geared up and got on the bikes, it was an hour ride from the farm to Oulu. It was an event for both ATV and bikes..pretty cool to watch. I've always been more impressing with a rider launching a 400+lb ATV in the air vs a 220lb bike in the air for some reason..

Then the rains came in for the bikes..went from dust to mud pretty quick.

After spending the better part of the day at the track, my tour guide decided to show me a little bit in the Oulu area. Not much different than here, other than people drive normal, not like the assholes we have here.
Baltic Sea? It was some odd weather, there was a very small thunderstorm and rain just offshore..was pretty cool to see

It was a long day and I was still adjusting to the time change..not to mention it was 11:30pm by the time we got back! Not sure how, but a slept something stupid, like 11 hours that night (not that it ever was dark..but still night)

Day 2 the plan was to ride some Enduro trails. Looking around the area, it looked like some easy trails as Finland is pretty flat. Hmmm, not really the case! One lap on his Enduro track kicked my ass and had me on the ground more than on the bike. I can't even describe how slick the ground is...roots and wet peat moss is what you were riding on. It was like riding in oil when compaired to riding around here! After being banged up by dropping the bike about 15 times, it was time to load the bikes and head over to a grass track at his friends house...even that was slick..haha The funny thing about the daylight hours there, it kills your sence of time. I had no idea when we returned that evening from riding, it was 1:38am and the sun was just setting!

Day 3 was a road trip...well started out that way anyways. I was able to rent a 1998 Yamaha YZF600 from a friend of his for 2 weeks, not a bad deal to rent a sportbike for 2 weeks for 300 Euro (about $450)

Waiting for a ferri...how do we pay? Ahh, we don't, ferri in Finland is free.

We ending up with about 350Km for the day and a nice scenic tour of the area. I forgot exactly what time we got back to the farm, but it was probably after 8pm. A quick BBQ on the grill and again, we were off on another adventure. We loaded up the enduro bikes and again went to the grass track for more practice. It's amazing how time flies when you're having fun..

The grass track was only 10 minutes away, and we still manage to arrive back at the farm at 1:06am to unload and clean up!

The next adventure was going to be a bit more exciting! We spent the next day shopping and prepping for a 5-6 day bike trip from Finland, into Sweden, then to Norway.

To be continued when I find more time

Very cool, sounds like quite an adventure. Beautiful scenery, too. Not sure if I'd get used to the daylight thing, but I'd love to take a long trip to Scandinavia sometime.

Is that gate B32? The one Flight 11 left out of on September 11?

I don't recall the exact gate number but it was terminal B and in the 30's

The daylight thing wasn't all that bad. The houses and hotels have good shades so sleeping isn't an issue. Keeping track of time is what always got me

    Re: Trip to Europe..

I think it was my 5th day there at this point. Our road trip got a bit delayed because of the weather, so wednesday morning we were off for a tour of northern Finland, Sweden and the coastline of Norway.
Packed up and ready to role...

First stop was downtown Oulu to exchange some money just in case the plastic cards didn't work

The plan was to head north in Finland and cross into Sweden just after Tornio. Seeing how Finland is pretty flat, there wasn't much scenery here other than a reindeer or 2 jumping in the road. The road surface was great but there wasn't many turns other than roundabouts..haha
Once we crossed into Sweden, we went south for a bit and stopped in Lulea for a rest, and to get a late lunch.

At this point, it was getting a little more hilly and more mountains. We didn't stay long, we had a destination for the day and were back on the bikes in less than 1/2 hour.
The next stop was Alvsbyn! By this time, it was 10pm, though still bright and sunny. Once in town, we grabbed a hotel room, then tried to find a place for a late diner. Fitting for the area, we stayed at the Polar Hotel!

By the time we checked in, showered and were ready to find a place to eat, it was just after 11pm. Even though it was sunny out, there wasn't a place open and not a person seen anywhere. The was a fuel station open though and I was hungry...so it was an unhealthy but good tasting meal that night. Ice cream sandwhich, snickers bar, and a half liter bottle of drinkable strawberry yogart
Back to the hotel room to call it a night..figured I'd turn the tv on and see some local news or something? Nope, Family Guy was on!

Looks like a good trip so far. The scandinavian countries are one of the few in Western Europe that I never had a chance to go to. I'll be in Europe again this fall but won't be making up north again.

    Re: Trip to Europe..

The second day of the road trip, the plan was to cover 400 or so Km for the day and make it to Bodo, Norway. A few rest stops along the way..

Time to get the rain gear on..it got cold and was pretty wet. Maybe 45-50 outside.

Finally crossing from Sweden into Norway...amazing scenery!

    Welcome to Norway.

It was like an endless Smuglers Notch type road in Vt..maybe 50-60km of single lane road with 2 way traffic and amazing scenery.

This couple were on their way to Russia and had 1 month to get there, they were 1 week into their trip. Very nice, spoke english and didn't have to buy expensive Bensin as their bikes were foot powered..haha

Things get intersting now...we have a problem!

We discovered the chain had a broken link on Jani's bike. We were only 30km from our destination to Bodo but it wasn't worth the risk of more damage. First thought was to check into a hotel and deal with it in the morning.
    Sorry, all rooms are booked!

Enjoy the scenery while looking for a second place..

No such luck..so we had to try and find a bike shop, or something? Keep in mind, it's almost 11pm by this point.
My tour guide spots this little MC club type thing down in a valley as we ride by, so we pully a U-turn and head down there. I didn't like the looks of it from the start, but he is determined to get his bike fixxed. All Harleys parked out in front, the door is locked and he is banging on the door! They open the door, bring him in and close and lock the door..leaving me outside with the bikes. Maybe 15 minutes later, the door unlocks and opens and they call me in as well. As I enter, they close and lock the door behind me...I'm thinking what the fuck at this point! He explains quick that they have a "club" meeting first, then they will try and help locate or fix the chain. We are sitting inside this place, my friend and I, and 2 of their club members watching over us. I was nervous, sweating bad because I had full leather on and raingear over it..and had to go to the bathroom. When I mention I had to go, they escorted me to the bathroom and waited by the door until I was done. At about the same time, it started to rain and we wanted to get our helmets out of the rain..again with the escort and locking and unlocking of the doors! We are sitting in this room for close to 2 hours, they are drinking like fish and smoking like chimneys..and offering us soda and coffee the whole time. Well out of the corner of my eye, I spot something really cool! A home made Spud gun! I'm looking at it and thinking should I ask about it or not? Finally I asked and after that point, it seemed to ease a lot of tension. Within a few minutes, we were firing lemons from it across the cove..haha

It was their idea to get a couple pictures with their club logo in the background with us holding the gun..

After the spud gun, we were back sitting in the room for another half hour before their club meeting ended. They spoke OK english, so at least there was good conversation.
When their meeting ended, they came and got my friend and took him to the shop to fix his bike..I was told to stay while they fixxed the bike? Now i'm again thinking what the fuck?
One of the people watching over...or "taking care of me" as they said it, asked if I wanted to shoot some pool..sure why not I said! I lost track of time and must have played 15-20 games of pool with a 50/50 win/lose ratio before Jani comes back and says the bike is fixxed, lets go! Within a few minutes, we were on the road again.

Looking back at it, while I was nervous the whole time, they were very welcoming and put a lot of effort into helping with the bike. They mentioned it was the first non-harley bike to enter the garage.

It was late by this time and we knew there would be nothing available for lodging in Bodo, so we back tracked a bit to a campground and got a cottage for the night. The cottage cost less than the fast food meal we had prior to the bike chain problems..haha Bunk bed style cots weren't that confortable, but the place had good heat for drying our wet gear.

    To be continued
